Bears and skunks both love to destroy ant nests and eat the ants inside. Carpenter Ants are a main source of food for young grouse and pileated woodpeckers. Smaller woodpeckers, along with some songbird species, also eat ants.
Flour or Chalk. Flour and chalk act as natural ant repellents. Calcium carbonate is the natural compound found in chalk. Calcium carbonate masks the scent trail of ants.
Spiders. Spiders are a very common predator of ants. Not only do they kill the worker ants, but many species will also eat ant larvae and their pupae to ensure that future generations are destroyed as well! In addition, it is believed that there are a lot of spider species worldwide which prey on ants.
Vinegar is an extremely effective natural carpenter ant deterrent. It disrupts their pheromone trails and the smell prevents them from returning.
Carpenter ant infestations, whether minor or severe, can be handled by utilizing many of the same measures as other ant species. Ant bait, insecticide dust, and insecticidal spray are the most common ant management techniques.
Boric acid dust also kills carpenter ants on contact, and it may be safer and easier to get into tiny spaces. Boric acid dust should be available at most hardware stores, and you'll typically use an included applicator to puff the dust into holes or crevices.
Pheromones send messages of a food source, sexual desire, and death. It is advised not to squash ants, doing so will only release pheromones and trigger more ants to come to the location and cause more trouble to you and your family. Ants are known to pack a deadly bite that causes excruciating pain for a short time.
Ghost Ants
Control is difficult because of the many nests that often make up a colony. Therefore, even a direct-nest spray treatment may not contact all members of all interrelated colonies. Like the pharaoh ant, ghost ants expand their colonies through budding.
Cayenne Pepper or Black Pepper
Both cayenne and black pepper repel ants. Ants hate cayenne pepper. Black pepper will work just as well too. Locate the source of the ant infestation problem, sprinkle some pepper around that area and if possible, create a wall that will stop the ants from accessing your household.
Carpenter ants dislike strong scents like garlic, lavender, essential oils, and vinegar. These items might seem harmless for the nose of a human, but ants find these smells incredibly irritating. But aside from its irritating smell, vinegar also affects the behavior of carpenter ants.
Essential oils: Carpenter ants rely on pheromone trails to locate food. Using essential oils is an all-natural way to throw them off the scent and deter them from returning to the targeted site. Cedarwood, peppermint, and tea tree all work.
Carpenter ants typically feed on sweets, meats, and small insects. Check your cupboards for potential ant food sources. If you have flour, sugar, cereals, grains, or other foods sitting out or unsealed in your cabinets, these can attract carpenter ants into your home.
Cedarwood has a reputation for keeping certain insects away. Carpenter ants will not eat cedar, but that does not mean that they won't use it for a nest.

Moisture: Carpenter ants love moist, damp areas. It's especially nice if there's some soft, even rotting wood involved because it makes it easy for them to chew through. If you have had a leak in your home that wasn't properly cared for, this is a huge attraction.
Ant colonies have a caste system, where responsibilities are divided in a systemic hierarchical order. As with human society, the typical ant hierarchy system comprises a queen, males, and workers with specific roles. But in contrast, there is no such thing as the king ant, as is mostly the case in human royal setups.
The bull dog ant earned its name because of its ferocity and determination during an attack. It is extremely aggressive and shows little fear of human beings, stinging a number of times in quick succession and therefore injecting more venom with each bite.
Pain Level 4 is the highest level in the Schmidt sting pain index. Schmidt's original index rated only one such example, the sting of the bullet ant, as a 4. Schmidt described the sting as "pure, intense, brilliant pain...like walking over flaming charcoal with a three-inch nail embedded in your heel."
Ant colonies have specialised undertakers for the task. They usually carry their dead to a sort of graveyard or take them to a dedicated tomb within the nest. Some ants bury their dead. This strategy is also adopted by termites forming a new colony when they can't afford the luxury of corpse carriers.
If you have killed or discovered dead ants near the foundations of your house, or precisely in your home, you should wait before trying to clean them up. As mentioned earlier, dead ants release a pheromone chemical that is supposed to alarm the colony.
Upon further investigation, this myth has been debunked. Ants are very sensitive to pheromones, a chemical substance they produce and release into the environment. When a pheromone trail is disrupted by chalk or a line drawn in their path, the scent trail they were following is temporarily disrupted.
Make a bait to find the nest.
They're attracted to sweets, so a little bit of jam or jelly can work. You can also mix equal parts sugar and baking soda, then place the mixture in a shallow dish. The sugar attracts the ants, but the baking soda will kill them naturally.
One of the simplest ways to destroy an ant nest is to cover it in boiling water. This method is cruel to the ants, but it is nonetheless very effective if you are looking to quickly eliminate carpenter ants. Using boiling water avoids the use of chemical products.
Although it is not their primary diet, carpenter ants do occasionally feed on common sweets such as syrup, honey, jelly, sugar, salt, and fruit and would be attracted to the sugars in TERRO® liquid bait during these times.
