Strong and Durable
Wool is the most durable carpeting option. Although it is more expensive than synthetic fiber/nylon carpets, the value that it adds to your home – plus the fact that it will outlast any nylon carpet – actually makes it a very good option for your budget!
Wool carpets, on the other hand, are well-known for their long-lasting good appearance, based on their excellent “bouncebackability”, great response to cleaning – both dry and wet – and resistance to soiling and therefore retention of colour.
You can expect a wool carpet to last for 20–25 years. They are one of the hardest-wearing types of carpet available.
Dust mites cannot live on wool carpets. They eat flakes of human skin. Wool carpets generally contain very low levels of permethrin, a naturally occurring substance that kills very small insects. Installing a wool carpet is a very good thing to do if there are asthma sufferers in your home.
It is also particularly important to vacuum your wool carpet every day for one week, when it has first been fitted. This will remove any residue such as dust that has settled during installation. We also recommend an extended care plan for your wool carpet, which involves vacuuming twice per week in high-traffic areas.
Q: How can you tell good quality carpet? A: one of the main signs to look for when identifying a high-quality carpet is its density. Carpets made from premium grade materials tend to be a lot denser than those made from low-quality textiles.
Wool carpets are natural and can be severely damaged by excess water seeping into the carpet. Many types of synthetic carpets however, may not be subject to permanent staining by water.
You need to steam clean your wool carpet at least once a year. At a glance, your carpet may appear clean, but there is a chance of a lot of hidden dirt. Dried mud, dust or trapped sand can wear the fibres of your carpet as you move around day today. Steam cleaning once a year can remove this hidden build-up of dirt.
Wool rugs tend to be more expensive than cotton or synthetic rugs, but they are durable and can last a lifetime with proper maintenance. Although it's recommended to have wool area rugs professionally dry cleaned for stubborn stains, cleaning your wool rug with a gentle surface scrub about once a year is doable.
To clean up fresh urine, simply vacuum over the spot repeatedly with the wet vac until no more moisture can be extracted. Prepare a mixture of 1 part vinegar and 1 part cold water, and test the solution on an inconspicuous part of the rug to be sure the rug is colorfast.
The biggest downside of buying a wool rug is that they are a big investment. In addition, if you are putting one in a nursery, or someplace where you plan to spend a lot of floor time they can feel itchy (just like a wool sweater) if you are laying on them.
Wool carpet, being a natural fiber, wears differently and installs differently than other fiber carpets. There are four different types of construction, generally speaking. One is tufted wool, which consists of wool fiber being tufted into a primary backing, with a secondary backing added to that for stability.
The main advantage of wool carpets is their longevity and excellent appearance retention compared to synthetics. Their timeless appearance is enhanced by their durability. The natural fibres (a big plus for environmentally conscious buyers!) make wool a very strong and durable floor covering.
Nylon is the most durable and stain resistant carpet fiber available, when treated with stain protection. It is the fiber of choice for homes with pets and children and for those who entertain a lot. Because of it's durability, nylon carpet is perfect for heavy foot traffic areas like hallways and stairs.
Twisted pile carpet is the most popular style of carpet and comes in a large variety of colors. The yarn has been tightly twisted and the loops are cut to become this style of carpeting.
DO NOT use any vacuum made by Oreck, Dyson, Miele, Shark as these will cause excessive fuzzing. In addition DO NOT use any Robotic vacuum or Whole House Central vacuum system.
Vacuum cleaners are perfect for use on carpets and other surfaces made up of fabrics. Sweeping is incapable when washing carpets for the fibers. Special vacuum cleaners may even manage waters to help eliminate spills and stains. On the other hand, brooms are inefficient in removing liquid.
First, if your wool carpet is brand-new, expect your carpet to shed excessively. This is perfectly normal and will clear up after a good and thorough vacuuming. For general vacuuming, it's important to ensure your vacuum's dust bag is not full before you clean. A full bag compromises the effectiveness of your vacuum.
Dust mites are present in all homes and are impossible to eradicate completely. You can see if you have dust mites by looking under a microscope and using a home testing kit. If you have allergic reactions to dust, that's a sign of dust mites in your home. However, dust mites are usually nothing to worry about.
Wool carpet may not irritate the respiratory tract or induce any other adverse allergic reactions since the majority of wool fibers are too long and thick to inhale. Wool carpets are made from carefully chosen fibers that pose negligible health risks, making them ideal for those who suffer from allergies.
Nylon is the most effective allergy-controlling carpet fiber. Wool, conversely, should be avoided because allergens and mold can thrive in it. Regardless of material, avoid shag -- the shorter the strands, the fewer places the pollen can go. Also choose carpet with tightly woven strands for the same reason.
