Pests are categorized into major and minor types primarily by the severity of the damage they cause and how often their populations cross the Economic Injury Level (EIL)—the point where the cost of controlling the pest outweighs the damage it causes.
A minor pest is an organism whose population naturally stays below the economic damage threshold (EIL) and causes only minor, sporadic, or localized injury to crops or environments. Unlike key pests, they rarely require active control unless environmental conditions trigger a sudden population surge.
The Four Main Categories of Pests. Pest classification helps professionals determine the most effective strategies for management and elimination. Each category has unique characteristics, life cycles, and methods of causing harm. The main categories are insects, plant diseases, weeds, and vertebrates.
Economic Injury Level (EIL) and Economic Threshold (ETL, often just ET) are foundational concepts in Integrated Pest Management (IPM). EIL is the lowest pest population density that causes damage equal to the cost of control. ETL is the action threshold; it is a slightly lower pest density meant to trigger management before the population reaches the EIL.
The largest numbers of described species in the U.S. fall into four insect Orders: Coleoptera (beetles) at 23,700, Diptera (flies) at 19,600, Hymenoptera (ants, bees, wasps) at 17,500, and Lepidoptera (moths and butterflies) at 11,500.
Common Insecta Orders
The five most common insect orders are Coleoptera, Lepidoptera, Hymenoptera, Diptera, and Hemiptera. The coleoptera contains the most species of insects, while the Hemiptera order contain true bugs. Insect orders are determined by the mouthparts of the insects.
Kissing bugs can be killed using direct physical methods, such as placing them in a sealed container in the freezer, or by applying residual insecticides labeled for indoor crawling pests. Chemical options containing pyrethroids (like bifenthrin, permethrin, or cypermethrin) are highly effective when sprayed in cracks, crevices, and entry points.
These pesticides are categorized as insecticides, herbicides, fungicides, rodenticides, molluscicides, nematicides, and plant growth regulators, further classified based on their primary targets and modes of action [53,54].
ETL is always lower than EIL. ETL acts as a warning system for farmers to take timely action, ensuring that pest populations do not reach levels that cause significant economic damage.
DDT (dichloro-diphenyl-trichloroethane) was developed as the first of the modern synthetic insecticides in the 1940s. It was initially used with great effect to combat malaria, typhus, and the other insect-borne human diseases among both military and civilian populations.
In 1958, China included the sparrow in its “Four Pests Campaign,” which aimed to improve agricultural activity and human health by eradicating flies, mosquitoes, rats and sparrows.
A pest is any living organism—such as an insect, rodent, or weed—that causes damage, poses a health risk, or is a nuisance to humans.
From rodents pests like rats, mice and squirrels to pest birds like gulls and feral pigeons and insects like fleas, moths, bedbugs, cockroaches, wasps, flies, ants and beetles, our experienced pest control technicians can help you resolve any pest problem.
If you have a minor infestation, you will (usually) only see roaches after the sun sets and you turn out the lights. But if you see them during the day it means you have a major infestation; there are so many cockroaches in the usual hiding places that some are forced to come out in the daylight due to overcrowding.
The mayfly is the most famous insect known for an adult lifespan of just 24 hours (with some species lasting only a few minutes or hours). As adults, they have no functional mouthparts and do not eat; their sole purpose in this short window is to swarm, mate, and lay eggs.
A minor bug is a small software or system flaw that causes slight annoyance or aesthetic issues. It does not crash the system, cause data loss, or prevent you from using core functions.
Integrated Pest Management (IPM) is a sustainable, science-based approach to managing pests by combining biological, cultural, physical, and chemical tools to minimize economic, health, and environmental risks. It centers on four main, tiered principles: preventing pest buildup, monitoring pest populations, setting action thresholds, and controlling pests using the least risky methods.
The 5 steps of the ETL process are: extract, clean, transform, load, and analyze. Of the 5, extract, transform, and load are the most important process steps. Clean: Cleans data extracted from an unstructured data pool, ensuring the quality of the data prior to transformation.
ETL serves as a preventive measure, ensuring that pest control is applied before the pest population causes significant economic damage. It helps in reducing over-reliance on chemical pesticides, thereby promoting environmental sustainability and preserving biodiversity.
use. • Class 7 pesticides are controlled sale products (domestic or restricted) • Class 8 pesticides are domestic products that are banned for sale and use. • Class 9 pesticides are ingredients in products for use only under. exceptions to the ban.
Fungicides are used to control fungal problems like molds, mildew, and rust. Herbicides kill or inhibit the growth of unwanted plants, aka weeds. Illegal and Counterfeit Pesticides are imported or sold illegally. Insecticides are used to control insects.
Group 4: Commonly referred to as synthetic auxins or growth regulators, Group 4 actives include herbicides such as 2,4-D and dicamba and typically work by mimicking auxin hormones in the plant, resulting in the disruption of plant growth.
Bed bugs are widely considered the worst household pest due to their extreme difficulty to eradicate, mental toll, and financial cost to eliminate, followed closely by termites for structural damage and German roaches for health risks. These pests are notoriously hard to kill because they hide in tiny crevices and are highly resilient to DIY treatments.
It's best to NOT squish a bug, but sometimes it happens! After the bug is squished, do not touch the bug with your bare hands. The T. cruzi parasite may be in the feces of kissing bugs, and their bodies may have the parasite on them.
Stop a bug bite from itching instantly by applying direct cold to numb the nerve endings. Follow up with targeted over-the-counter creams or quick home remedies to neutralize the histamine reaction and calm the skin.
