Stiles – This is the collective name for the vertical components that sit on the outside edge of a door. Lock stile – This is the vertical edge of the door which sits on the opposite side of the door to the hinges, and contains the lock or latch.
What is a Stile and Rail Door? Stile and rail doors are constructed from horizontal rails and vertical stiles, with panels secured in between. Together, they give the illusion of a single carved piece of wood.
Lock rail. This is a horizontal rail that is situated between the vertical stiles at the same height as the lockset for hardware. Stiles. These are the vertical components on each side of the door that join the rails with dowels.
Raised or inset-panel doors have stiles and rails, both typically measuring 2 to 2-1/2 inches in width. Stiles and rails for doors almost always measure equally in width except when the top rail is arched – which can add another 2 inches to the top rail, making it 3 or 4 inches wide on both sides of the arch.

Every window has a top and bottom rail; rails located at the center of a doublehung window opening are known as "meeting rails." Jambs are the main vertical members that form the sides of a window. Stiles are the main vertical members in the framework of a sash, found at the sides of a window.

Typical width for shaker stiles on panels, doors and drawer fronts usually is 2 1/4 inches. This is the same width used on standard door and window casing, as well as ordinary baseboard.
A door constructed with glass panes, shaped to particular size and pattern is called the glazed door. They are hard but delicate and used mostlyinside as architectural features in new building and renovation.
Face frames on sides of kitchen cabinets should overlap 1/4 in. on the outside edge. This makes room for adjustments when installing them next to one another. Build the face frame so that the bottom rail (“rails” are horizontal boards and “stiles” are vertical boards) projects 1/16 in.
That's actually pretty easy to do. You just cut away the sticking on the stiles with the bandsaw where the rail meets them and then pare with a shoulder plane and chisel. Before gluing up the door I cut the hinge pockets in the hinge stile and new frame I needed to make.
Origin of stile
From Middle English stile, style, stiȝele, from Old English stiġel (“stile, set of steps for getting over a fence”), from Proto-Germanic *stigilō (“entry, entrance, overpass, device for climbing, stile”), equivalent to sty (“to ascend, climb”) + -le.
SOLID STILE AND RAIL
Panels are usually MDF and have crisper milled details than molded doors; their skins are either wood veneer or a smooth layer of MDF. These are heavier and more expensive than so-called solid-core doors.
Stile and Rail Width
Cabinet stiles and rails are typically 1 1/2 to 1 3/4 inches wide. The width of the cabinet stiles and rails depends first and foremost on the quality of the kitchen cabinet. More economical cabinet lines have stiles and rails that are 1 1/2 inches wide as a rule.
The rails and stiles are often the same width for an even border around the door. The length of the stiles will be equal to the height of the door. The width of the rails is equal to the width of the door, minus the width of 2 stiles, plus the depth of the panel groove / connection joint on each stile.

Glaze can serve to color, decorate or waterproof an item. Glazing renders earthenware vessels suitable for holding liquids, sealing the inherent porosity of unglazed biscuit earthenware. It also gives a tougher surface. Glaze is also used on stoneware and porcelain.

Using glazing to retain warmth in the winter and reflect heat in the summer is a clever way to reduce the need of air conditioning and heaters. Low E glass and toned glass will enhance the temperature control within your home, or invest in double glazing to achieve an energy rated home.
All you need is oak strips, plywood, wood glue and a table saw. That's it! (If you have flat panel cabinets already, you can update them to be shaker style like on the drawer fronts here.)
Adding plywood trim is an economical way to convert plain or outdated cabinets to Shaker style. Here's how to do it: 1. With a table saw, cut a sheet of 1/4-inch-thick plywood into 2-1/4-inch-wide strips along the length.
