Extinguishing a candle by putting on a non-flammable lid will work and is safe, but I do not recommend it because it traps the smoke inside once the flame is snuffed out. That smoky smell does mix with the freshly melted wax, which can impact the scent when you decide to light your candle again.

No they don't lose scent if the lid is securely on and candles are stored in a dark cool room. Some people keep their candles in their basement. I have BBW candles from 2008 and 2009 and over the holidays I decided to burn one of them.

What is the difference between a candle dipper and a snuffer?

A wick dipper works by gently submerging the wick into the melted wax, which cuts off oxygen and stops the flame without smoke. In contrast, a snuffer involves placing a bell-like cover over the flame, cutting off oxygen, and extinguishing the candle that way.

Why can't you burn a candle for more than 4 hours?

If you burn your candle for more than 4 hours at a time, carbon will collect on the wick, and your wick will begin to "mushroom." This can cause the wick to become unstable, the flame to get too large, your candle to smoke, and soot to be released into the air and around your candle container.
