I highly recommend! I bought this to cover a bookcase that was made of simulated wood over pressboard, I painted it with a water based paint after I primed with this Bin Primer. The liquid primer doesn't stink as bad as the spray can. I've used the spray can over patched brown paper drywall damaged patches.
Zinsser BIN Primer is perfect for use on interior surfaces and spot priming of exterior surfaces. Recommended for application to interior ceilings, walls, doors, trim, cabinets, furniture, and related paintable surfaces. Exterior uses are limited to spot priming only.
The drawback to using shellac-based primers is that they are not as versatile as latex or oil and they give off more fumes. They require that you use denatured alcohol to thin them and clean applicators.
An alternative is a shellac based primer like Zinsser BIN primer and you get the added benefit of it smelling like rum instead of headaches and it cures really quickly. Shellac works great on adhesive and paper based products so it should work well on particle board.

When priming MDF wood for painting, we recommend Zinsser BIN Primer. BIN primer is a shellac-based primer that creates great adhesion for your chosen topcoat. A fast drying primer, it can be applied directly without any sanding and is ready for a topcoat after just 45 minutes.
Shellac has a soft finish compared to modern alternatives like polyurethane. It's prone to scratches and wear, making it unsuitable for high-traffic surfaces like tabletops.

Dry Time– In most cases B-I-N® will dry to the touch in 20 minutes and can be recoated in 45 minutes. The dry primer film develops full adhesion after it cures in 1 to 3 days. Lower temperatures, higher humidity and the addition of tint will prolong dry and cure time.

One coat, applied properly, is all you need. The two finish coats will even up the colors. BIN isn't specifically made to seal odors, it just happens to be great at it. Give it a scuff sand after application to knock down the garbage that may have been applied during priming.
If you are working on a small project, a foam roller is fine! If you're working on a larger project I recommend a microfiber roller. In addition to preventing bleed through, BIN Shellac sticks to any surface without sanding.
Top Performers
We experimented with lots of primers for our tests to find the best primer for painting stained wood. The top performers we found were: Seal Grip from PPG, Stix from Benjamin Moore, Sherwin Williams Extreme Bond Primer, and Behr Bonding Primer from Home Depot.
