KILZ Original 1 gal. White Oil-Based Interior/Exterior Primer, Sealer, and Stain Blocker 10981 - The Home Depot.
KILZ Original 1 Qt. Oil-Based White Primer, Sealer and Stain Blocker is suitable for application on most interior surfaces such as furniture, drywall, plaster, woodwork, paneling, wallpaper, masonry, brick, painted metal and properly prepared glossy surfaces. It blocks smoke and water stains and it seals pet odors.
Oil-based primers offer excellent adhesion and stain-blocking properties but take longer to dry and have a stronger odor. Water-based primers dry quickly, have less odor, and are easier to clean but may not block stains as effectively. The choice depends on the project requirements and preferences.
Dry Time @ 77°F (25°C) / 50% RH: Touch in 30 minutes. Paint in 1 hour.
Rating: KILZ ORIGINAL INTERIOR/EXTERIOR Primer is an oil-based primer, sealer and stain blocker ideal for heavy stain blocking, sealing multiple interior and exterior surfaces and preparing it for painting. It is especially effective at blocking graffiti, tannin, water, smoke, and other bleeding stains.
It also dries quickly and provides a mildew resistant coating. It can be used under water-based or oil-based paint.
Both KILZ 2® All Purpose and KILZ 3® Premium are perfect for interior and exterior priming on multiple surfaces. KILZ 3® Premium is the right primer for heavy duty sealing and blocking out stains or dark colors.
It's ready to brush, roll or spray and can be topcoated after one hour with latex or oil-based paint. Use KILZ STANDARD Primer on almost all interior surfaces including wood, drywall, plaster, brick, masonry and more.
Depending on how strong or bold the previous color is, it may be necessary to apply more than one coat of primer. However, it is not necessary to over apply the primer with so many coats. As long as the primer applies uniformly over the previous color, then one or two coats should be sufficient.
Inspect and Sand: After drying, check for drips or rough spots, sanding lightly if necessary.
What are the benefits? Oil-based primers are better at blocking or sealing stains, especially water-soluble stains. They're also superior at blocking tannin.
After priming, allow to dry 4 hours, test a small area for bleeding by applying the topcoat before painting the entire project. If the stain bleeds through, apply a second coat of primer and allow to dry overnight and retest before topcoating. Use Multi-Purpose Latex Primer over solvent sensitive stains.
CAN YOU USE OIL PAINT OVER WATER-BASED PAINT? Yes. In fact, this option works so much better than the opposite: painting with a water-based paint over an oil-based layer. This is quite common when you use primers to prepare a wall, cabinet doors, or trim for the final paint layer.
A premium all-purpose alkyd primer, undercoater and stain-blocking sealer for vertical and horizontal surfaces, this oil-based primer delivers a mildew-resistant coating, superior tannin-blocking, four-hour recoat and excellent hide.
Apply as supplied using a brush, roller or sprayer. Do not thin. Stir thoroughly before and occasionally during use. Prime the entire surface to ensure a uniform appearance of the topcoat.
Rating: KILZ 2 ALL-PURPOSE Primer (Previously KILZ 2 Latex) is a fast-drying, water-based, multi-surface primer-sealer-stainblocker with excellent adhesion, mildew resistance, sealing properties and very mild odor.
We recommend KILZ KLEAR® Clear Sealer & Bonding Primer – a high performance fast-drying, multi-surface clear primer developed to seal highly porous surfaces inside and outside your home. It is also recommended for use when painting the same topcoat paint color on top of an existing paint coat.
In general, one gallon of paint or primer will cover roughly 250-350 square feet of surface.
It's recommended to wait at least 24 hours before adding a coat of paint over your primer. Painting over it soon could cause your paint to adhere to the wall improperly, flaking and peeling.
The oil-based paint will not adhere well to the latex surface, leading to poor adhesion and eventual peeling. To avoid costly mistakes, always choose the appropriate paint type for your project and follow the recommended guidelines.

Original Kilz Primer allowed more seep through when put in two coats to two different walls in the same area, whereas Zinsser provided superior coverage.
Works with oil and water-based paints. Not recommended for floors.
Over time, fluctuating temperatures and humidity levels can make paint peel. For spaces where this is normal like kitchens, using KILZ 3® Premium Primer (known for its exceptional adhesion and durability) before you paint can help ensure your paint job lasts longer.
