What Does Paint Primer Do, and When Is It Necessary? Primer sticks to your wall and creates a nice, smooth finish for your paint.
The best primer for smooth or textured Interior surfaces, is a Latex-based primer, such as the Sherwin Williams, “Premium Wood and Wall” Primer/Sealer. For textured surfaces, popcorn ceilings, an oil-based primer, like the KILZ Original Multi-Surface Stain Blocking Interior Oil-Based Primer, works best.
That said, and as others have already said, primer isn't going to fix imperfections, but it will assure good adherence of your paint. (even if the paint purports to be a primer/paint combo as many low to mid-range products do these days) I use the primer from Sherwin Williams in most cases.

Using Flat Finish Paint:
You can also apply flat paint finish on the wall as they can reduce the amount of light reflected off the wall. This also reduces the visibility of dents and dings and other drywall imperfections. Flat finishes also look bolder and classier than other glossier paints.

Red is difficult because many hues simply aren't made for wall space. The rich raspberry red that looks great in nail polish and lipstick will be overpowering in a room. If you get too much brown in your red, it will be dull and lifeless. Covering red paint with a new color can also be a nightmare!
