1. Modern ovens are designed to have the light on for extended periods without causing any harm. 2. The light bulb is encased in a protective cover, reducing the risk of anything catching fire.
Jon Grella : Usually if the light in the oven is on it usually means that either the door is open or not closed fully. Enough so that the door switches not closed. And the door switch is what keeps the light on in the oven.
Understanding the Oven Cycling Light Operation
When the light turns off after the preheat period, the oven has reached the desired temperature. The light will continue to cycle on and off as the Bake element goes on and off to maintain the set oven temperature as long as the oven is turned on for baking.
If the oven light won't turn off, either the relay on the control board is stuck, or the door switch has failed and thinks the door is open all the time. Try to unplug the oven or flip the breaker off for 1 minute to see if the electronics will reset.
Once the oven has reached the temperature you have chosen, then the light will go out.
Modern ovens are designed to have the light on for extended periods without causing any harm.
First, make sure the bulb is the problem
It could be an issue with the electricity. Check to make sure the power cord is plugged into a working outlet. Double-check that other parts of the oven that run on electricity are working, such as the clock. You can also check the circuit breaker.
Will the oven still work without the light? Technically, yes your oven should still get hot if your light has stopped working. However, it will make your life considerably more difficult. You won't be able to identify whether or not your appliance is on, and you won't be able to tell when your food is cooked as easily!
If it turns off when the ignition knob is released, it may be related to how the ignition knob was turned, foreign objects on the burner, improper assembly of the burner, and whether or not the battery is discharged. It turns off if ignition is not detected by the sensor accurately; this is a safety device.
A broken hot surface switch on one of the burners causes the Hot Surface light to stay on constantly. To find out which surface element to replace, you'll lift the glass cooktop and test each of the hot surface switches using a multimeter.
If this happens to you, it's probably not the oven light bulbs themselves that are the problem. The most likely culprit is a faulty electrical connection inside the oven. This is something that you'll need to get fixed by a professional.
THE LIGHT BULB ITSELF
The correct wattage, connectors, and dimensions are all crucial, as well as a specific designation that a bulb is rated for appliance use. A bulb that isn't rated for oven use will not last long in an oven!
You may see an Automatic Oven indicator on the oven control panel, depending on your model. The indicator will light up when you use either Cook Time, Delay Time, or both. It is especially helpful when using Delay Time so that you know that it has been set and will start automatically at the time you set it to start.
If the red light remains on, the problem is a short circuit in the control switch that remains connected. If the light is off, then the disconnected control is at fault and must be replaced. Before you continue, disconnect the stove and turn off the breaker again.
The bulb can put off enough heat to warm the oven if left on. Check for a switch on the backsplash of the range that controls the oven light and make sure it is in the OFF position.
The oven light often gets its power from the oven control board. If the control board is shorted the light can stay on. If the light switch or door switch is in the off position, but the light stays on, the control board has likely shorted and will need to be replaced.
Some ovens have a door-triggered switch so that the light comes on when the door opens and turns off when the door closes. Some have a hidden switch underneath or even inside the oven, as well. The hidden switch is one of the leading (and easiest to solve) causes for an oven light staying on.
Almost all Ranges and Wall Ovens have an interior oven light. On some models, the oven light will turn on automatically when the oven door is opened. Other models have a light switch for manually operating the oven light.
6. Using Oven Without Light. You may still be able to use the oven without the bulb. If the bulb is burnt out or not working, the oven may be used as usual; however, if the bulb is broken or shattered, do not use the oven because that is dangerous.
On average oven bulbs are designed to last around 900 hours for their lifespan. So, typically if you were to use the oven light 8 hours a day it would take about 4 months for your bulb to start fading and stop working.
Not only will you be risking fire hazards, but the gas that comes from your oven can lead to carbon monoxide poisoning. Carbon monoxide is odorless and colorless.
The possible reasons your oven is not working may include a broken baking or broiling element, a malfunctioning spark element (spark electrode), a broken igniter, a blown fuse, an issue with the control board, or outlets not providing enough power to the oven.
Now, the average oven will still cook your food perfectly well without a working light bulb, but the lack of light will make your life that little bit harder. And hey, replacement oven bulbs aren't hard to come by, so why stay saddled with a broken one?
Many electric ranges include a fuse in the 120-volt circuit that operates such items as oven and stovetop lights, the electric clock, convenience outlets, etc.
