The main advantages of hanging your blinds outside of the recess are that more light will enter the room when the blinds are open. You can block out more light when the blinds are closed. However, any items that you have placed on the windowsill won't be visible when you close the blinds.
Fitting Blinds Inside of Recesses
The inside of a recess is a perfectly viable option for fitting a blind. Although the top of the window will be partially covered by the blind, this will make little difference if the blind is left down for most of the time.
Inside the recess
This method of hanging blinds positions the blind right next to the window, within the recess. It should be noted that this method isn't always available as, generally, a recess depth of 7.5cm is needed to ensure there is enough room for the blind.
This is largely based on the look you want to achieve, but potentially by how serious you are about reducing light leakage around the sides of the blind too. Some people choose to fit Roman blinds inside of the window recess as this creates a smaller footprint and gives a neater appearance as the blind is tucked away.
For maximum privacy, mount the blinds above the window frame and extend them past the sides and bottom of the frame. Light bleed around the blinds is decreased with the extra width and length. If necessary, shim the blind bracket out so the blind falls freely. This method works well for disguising an ugly window frame.
As opposed to inside mount when the coverings are mounted inside the window frame, outside mount is mounted on the wall above the window and directly on the trim. Because of this the blinds or shades will need to be wider than your window opening.
Use a tape measure and a pencil to mark 1 1/4 inches away from the window to keep the blinds from touching the glass when hung.
Outside mount (sometimes referred to as outside brackets) means that a blind or shade is installed outside of the window frame while an inside mount is installed inside the window opening. Inside mount blinds are often flush with the window's opening and do not cover up the trim.
An over rolled blind on the face will leave a gap between the blind and the architrave, allowing a large amount of light to come in from the sides. An under rolled blind on the face however will roll as close to flush against the architrave/wall, minimising light and increasing privacy.
Not Adding Width To Outside Mount Blinds
We recommend going at least 2" wider than the opening on either side, so 4" total. For the height, go about 3 inches above the window trim (to allow for the mounting brackets) and measure from that point down to the window sill.
Yes, for your blinds to work to greatest effect and to achieve the right visual finish, window blinds should rest on the windowsill. The only exception to this is vertical blinds which require a small amount of clearance to prevent the louvres from dragging on the windowsill when operated.
Up (Rounded Side Facing Out)
When the blinds are turned up, the rounded side faces outward. Blinds turned in this direction offer more privacy and light control since the convex side faces the window, blocking light or views from the outside.
A face fitting roller blind sits attached to the face of your window recess (that's the distance between the window pane and the wall the window is built into).
Blinds and shades can be mounted to the ceiling as long as you have adequate support. The best way to install blinds in the ceiling is to make sure you are mounting the blinds into rafter beams, studs or joists.
Attaching Brackets:For outside mount, the brackets should be placed on the face of the window outline on the two sides of the window. And for inside mount, the brackets should be put up against the inside top corner of each side window.
Blinds can either be installed inside the window frame (for inside-mount blinds) or on the wall on either side of the window (for outside-mount blinds).
Window should have a minimum recessed space of 2 3/8" for inside mount. Measure the width of the window from the top of the opening to the sill in 3 places. Use the smallest dimension for the blind width. The factory will automatically deduct up to 1/4" - 1/2".
Inside mount refers to blinds and shades that are installed within the confines of a window frame. That means the headrail is attached flush with the top of the window frame and the window treatment is fully contained inside the four corners of the frame itself. Pros: Inside mounts provide a sleek, built-in appearance.
A window recess (or window reveal) is the distance between the surface of a window pane and the the wall that the window is built into. In order to determine whether you will be designing/installing an inside or outside mount, we need to first work out whether the window has a reveal and, if so, how deep it is.
Face fit blinds. Also referred to as an 'outside mount', 'face fixing' or 'face fixed', face fitting your blinds involves installing the blind to the front or face of the architrave, or above it. With a face fit, the blind covers the entire window, extending past the diameter of the window space.
A face fitted blind immediately makes the window appear larger than it really is. It provides a sleek finish, highly functional option and can help you to regulate temperature and filter light in your rooms. Because it covers the entire size of the window there is no light bleed and you can achieve maximum blockout.
This means that when it comes to the solid fabric of the blind itself, you cannot see through blackout blinds from outside at night, or during the day for that matter either. Blackout blinds then do provide privacy at night, and won't let either light in or out, nor the sight of things best kept private.
Adjusting your blinds with the slats facing down provides the maximum privacy. When in this position it offers the most coverage and protection from the outside looking in.
The View From Outside During The Day
From outside they do offer privacy due to the fact that the light outside is much brighter than the light inside. As you can see from the picture the person in the room can not be seen. However you can notice the items on the sill due to their close proximity to the blind.
