Shellac Primer If you have a surface that you need to seal before painting or want to cover up a stained surface, then shellac is what you need. Shellac dries even quicker than acrylic, drying within an hour in most cases, and this is perfect if you are doing a point job in one day.
Shellac-based primer is very good for blocking stains such as smoke, water damage, and grease. It also acts as a great 'first coat' over problem surfaces like varnish and old oil-based paint. It's very quick drying, which means it's also good when you want to crack on with the rest of the decorating.
It is water-based, but when it has dried, it's quite water-resistant. You can remove a shellac finish with denatured alcohol, but removing an acrylic finish is much more difficult. Shellac has a strong alcohol odor when wet, but dries quickly. The acrylic paints I've used never had much of an odor.
Shellac based primers are generally not used as a finish coat. You use them to solve a problem before painting over it. They wreck brushes so buy cheap then throw away. You can't use them for large exterior areas because, even though shellac is tough as old boots, it dries brittle and can't flex.
Nope you need to prime oil with oil primer or shellac before using waterbased.
You only need to sand if there are brush strokes or other blemishes. Also you don't need to sand between coats.
Water-based primers even out patched or repaired surfaces very well. They can also cover and seal in previous minor stains from smoke, lipstick, crayon, etc., but are not as effective at covering stains as oil- and shellac-based primers.
Wear NIOSH approved respirator and provide adequate ventilation. B-I-N Shellac-Base Primer may be tinted with up to 2 ounces of universal colorant per gallon. Tinting the primer toward the color of the topcoat helps hide in one coat. Note: The addition of universal colorant may prolong the dry time of this product.

The round up. If you have strong natural nails, shellac is a top option that will be kind to your nails on removal, with a beautiful natural finish. If you're looking for something that will last for a longer period, say a honeymoon or holiday – go for gel. If you have weak nails, or want some drama – go for acrylics.

Shellac is most often used in artwork as a sealing finish on wood or other porous substrates that will later be painted over.
If you're working on a larger project I recommend a microfiber roller. In addition to preventing bleed through, BIN Shellac sticks to any surface without sanding. It can be used inside or for spot-priming outside and it can also be used under-or-over any chalk, milk, latex or oil based paint. It dries really fast, too.
Natural bristle is the best choice for oil-based paints, varnishes, shellac, alkyd enamels, oil stains and oil-based polyurethanes. The highest quality bristles come from mainland China. Experienced, traditional painters will say there's nothing like the finish that a China bristle can provide for oil-based coatings.

They work well on wood, metal, plaster, and even plastic, and are fast drying and highly adhesive. They also can be used with both oil-based and latex paints. The drawback to using shellac-based primers is that they are not as versatile as latex or oil and they give off more fumes.
