Vinegar and baking soda: Add 1 or 2 cups of vinegar to the toilet bowl along with a few sprinkles of baking soda. Swish the solution around the bowl with your brush for a few minutes and then let it sit for about 15 minutes. Scrub the stains with your brush (or pumice stone).
You can also soak paper towels or rags on an especially stained spot, and let sit. Wipe with a non-abrasive sponge or towel, and rinse/dry thoroughly. Although oxygen-based bleach is sometimes available in powdered form (like OxiClean), we strongly recommend using only liquid versions.
If you want to keep the tank clean longer, you can also go back in with the vinegar, adding a cup or two to the tank once a month, letting it soak, and flushing the toilet the next morning.
We recommend using a mixture of ¼ cup of vinegar for every 1 cup of water. This ensures your toilet tank is being disinfected without causing damage, which the use of bleach or chemical cleaners can do.
Brown stains in a toilet bowl are often caused by hard water or rust. Soaking the bowl with white vinegar or lemon juice, then scrubbing with baking soda or a pumice stone can help lift those stains.

Oxygen bleach Oxygen bleach (like OxiClean) is an alternative to chlorine bleach, and it's safe for many fabrics. You can use it to remove stains on colors, as well as whites. It doesn't contain scary chemicals and it won't ruin most fabrics—though you should avoid using it on silk or leather.
OxiClean contains several ingredients, but the important one for boosting and brightening laundry is sodium percarbonate — basically, dry hydrogen peroxide plus washing soda (also called sodium carbonate, which is very similar to but not exactly baking soda).
