Don't overload your dryer. Overloading causes excessive heat which increases the risk of fire.
It's not a fire hazard putting too much stuff in. It makes the dryer work harder and clothes are not completely dry. What makes it a fire hazard is the lint build up inside the dryer and hose. The lint does escape and get everywhere inside the dryer.
Mechanical Strain: An overloaded dryer can put additional strain on the motor and other components, potentially causing them to malfunction or overheat. To minimize these risks, it's best to follow the manufacturer's guidelines regarding load size and to regularly clean the lint trap and vent.
Overloading will put a strain on the dryer motor. If regularly made to overwork, the motor can burn out prematurely or explode, causing your repair bills to blow up as well.
Electrical Contracting News reports there were 668 tumble dryer fires and 624 washing machine fires in 2019/20203 and according to UK government fire statistics, there were 884 tumble dryer fires and 509 washing fires in 2021/20224.
Cooking. Unattended cooking is listed as the number one cause of residential fires.
To prevent overloading, the dryer should never be more than 3/4 full. Additionally, clothes may not dry properly if the dryer contains too few items. It's recommended to dry at least 3 to 5 items, ensuring the sensors in your dryer can accurately detect the laundry's dryness level during a Sensor Dry cycle.
The Risks of Overloading Your Washing Machine
A burned-out motor can be expensive to repair or may even require replacement. Drum Imbalance: When too many clothes are stuffed inside, the load becomes uneven, causing the drum to wobble and vibrate excessively.
When clothes are piled up on the top of the dryer, they risk falling off and behind the dryer. There, it becomes a serious fire hazard if it blocks the vents, since this will cause heat to build up. Not to mention that clothing is flammable, which means it's more likely to ignite.

The high-limit thermostat, or thermal fuse, is a safety feature that's designed to trip whenever the dryer reaches a dangerous temperature. Once the thermal fuse reaches its threshold, it will turn off the heating element or dryer.
If you overload the dryer, the clothes don't have enough space to tumble freely. This can lead to uneven drying, with some clothes coming out still damp while others are overdried. This will result in excessive wrinkling and potentially impact the texture of your garments too.
Dryer fire hazards typically originate from two places, dryer venting and the lint trap. More than one-third of the fires are attributed to a failure to clean and perform routine maintenance. This means that many of these fires are preventable.
If you overload the drum, the machine will still use the same amount of water. So there won't be enough water to wash the extra clothes you put in. As a result, your clothes will come out without being properly cleaned. The water might not reach some clothes at all, if they're tightly packed.
Some motors have overload protectors that turn off the motor when excess strain is put on it. Often, dryers are equipped with a reset button on the control panel. If the motor won't run, let the dryer cool for about ten minutes. Then press this reset button.
Pumps, pulleys, and motors have to work harder when the machine is heavy and overloaded. This can cause those components to wear out faster than usual and may lead to a burning smell when they need replacement. Be sure not to overfill your washer and keep heavier items to a small load size.

If you overload your dryer with too many items, an excessive amount of lint can build up and can prevent the dryer from properly ventilating. As a heating element, a drying machine can't ventilate properly when it's at or above capacity and it may be at a higher risk of causing a fire.
Placing too many clothes in your dryer at once is a bad idea. It generally means your clothes won't properly dry, which means you'll have to run them through again. This is hard on your clothes, and it's hard on your dryer. Just save yourself the trouble and split your clothes and linens into smaller loads.

Culprit #1: Lint.
Lint is the leading cause of dryer fires. It's highly flammable, and it's everywhere. Lint naturally accumulates in your dryer and dryer exhaust system. This buildup makes the dryer work harder for each load and the lint can work its way into the heating element, which is bad news.

Refrigerators. Did you know that refrigerators are actually the most common fire-causing appliance in the U.S.? You can blame the fact that refrigerators run all day and night, leading to tired old relay switches and worn-out compressors, both of which are serious fire risks.
