Liquid sandpaper is a chemical solution that removes the glossy layer from a painted item, enabling you to paint over the object without the paint dripping off. Unlike regular sandpaper, it just removes gloss; it can't be used to smooth the surface, correct imperfections or as a paint primer.
Deglosser, aka ``Liquid Sandpaper'', is used to prep for painting, for example when prepping to paint over old wood with a natural or varnished finish. It was mentioned here in that context, specifically when painting old kitchen cabinets, and I've used it when painting over paneling or wood trim.
If there is no need to repair deep gouges in the wood (with traditional sanding techniques), deglosser, also known as ``liquid sandpaper'' can be a perfect option to dull that finish. Apply the deglosser with a green scouring pad, lightly scrubbing the deglosser with the grain of the wood.
Let the deglosser completely dry and maybe even let it sit for a few hours to a couple of days to make sure there are no damages to the wood or quality of the item. You can even apply a small amount of paint, stain, varnish, etc., to the area after the deglosser dries to make sure the desired results are achieved.
Usually starting with 40 grit, use this rougher type of sandpaper to fully clear an area of rust or deep scratches before filling and applying primer. It can even be used to prepare bodywork itself, prior to filler being added and shaped when dry (80 grit is best for this at first).
To Improve Adhesion
This is because sandpaper adds a subtle amount of texture to the surface, improving paint adhesion. If your goal is to improve adhesion, you can sand the area before adding primer and even between individual coats of paint for a more durable finish.
The gloss will decrease, and it is intended to micro-etch the surface. Klean Strip® Liquid Sandpaper could damage the cabinet hardware if it is allowed to remain on the surface. If product gets on the hardware, clean with a damp rag. Klean Strip® Liquid Sandpaper will leave a slight residue that can be painted over.
Liquid sandpaper alternatively also works well for removing a polyurethane topcoat from cabinet doors. Apply using the directions on the bottle.
Even though it started to work right away you still want to grab a paint brush (I use a chip brush) and spread a thick layer of liquid sandpaper over the surface. And let it sit for 30 minutes. After 30 minutes the clear coat will be almost completely frosted or hazy looking. Now you are ready to paint.
Then dry the surface with a clean, lint-free cloth. This prevents loose pieces of dust that naturally attach to an object from remaining on the surface and being painted over. Next, rub in the liquid sandpaper using another clean, lint-free cloth.
Liquid sandpaper is very effective in small spaces or over ornate work where you can't use regular sandpaper. However, it also offers distinct disadvantages.

While wet sanding is commonly used for smoothing and finishing surfaces, it can be used for paint removal. Auto body shops and car restoration companies regularly use wet sanding to remove paint from cars.
Liquid sandpaper, a.k.a. deglosser, is a chemical that can be used to rough up existing paint on walls and other surfaces by removing the gloss, making it possible to paint over what's left on the wall after use. This is good for hard to reach places or an object that you may feel would be awkward to sand.
Even though oil primer smells bad and can be messy to work with, it's the best option for painting over polyurethane because it soaks into wood to form a seal without raising the grain like a latex primer would.
When you use vinegar on polyurethane finished wood, the acid in the vinegar breaks down the finish and starts to pit the finish. These pits trap sand and along with the acid will eventually strip the polyurethane.

Can you paint over primer without sanding the car? Technically, yes, you can do that. Some circumstances don't require sanding the existing paint and primer before repainting. If you choose this route, the car's surface might show minimal damage like puncture holes, body scratches, dents, and cracks.
What grit sandpaper should I use before primer? When looking to sand a surface before applying primer, the best grit sandpaper to use is 320 to 400. Both these grits can effectively remove the existing primer and help you flatten the surface.
After the primer dries, lightly sand away bumps and ridges using very fine grit sandpaper folded into quarters. When the grit of one section of sandpaper becomes covered with dust, switch to an unused section and continue. Wipe the wall clean with a damp towel or sponge and allow it to dry before painting.
