Wipe off with a clean cloth, turning cloth often to avoid smears. When the clean, de- glossed surface is dry to the touch (usually about 10 minutes), new finish can be applied.
User Whatever works ... Start with a spray cleaner like 409 or its generic equivalents. If there are resistant spots, try a mild solvent like rubbing alcohol or mineral spirits. Do NOT use an oily soap: Murphy's, and the ``easy on the skin'' dishwashing liquids will make your paint job fail.
Spray directly on surface, and blot away any overspray immediately. Apply pre-moistened cloth to surface in a circular motion. Wipe off with a clean cloth, turning often to avoid smears. When the clean, de-glossed surface is dry to the touch (usually about 10 minutes), new paint finish can be applied.
An effective technique used by many professional painters to wash walls is to use a slightly wet sponge with warm water and a residual cleaning agent, such as dish soap. This method is highly effective for general wall cleaning.
Rinse food contact surfaces with potable water after use. Rinsing is not necessary unless floors are to be coated with finish or restorer.
Washing Walls
Cleaning walls and trim will remove grime, cobwebs, dust and stains that can prevent your paint from adhering. Use a mixture of lukewarm water and mild soap, gently rubbing in a circular motion. Rinse your walls using a slightly damp cellulose sponge.

In most cases, professional painters don't wash walls with a detergent solution to avoid damaging the drywall or trim. Instead, most professional painters lightly sand or “scuff” the walls with a pole sander using fine-grit sandpaper.
Wash off dirt, grease, soap and oil buildup with the appropriate cleaner and rinse thoroughly. Remove loose paint and powdery substances. Patch holes and cracks with spackling or patching compound. Allow to dry, then sand smooth.
