The short answer, and the best answer is "no, just don't do it". Driving anything more than a lawnmower over them risks serious damage resulting in your money and time going down the drain. Here's why...
You can drive over a buried pipe. As Tolyn Ironhand pointed out you will have little risk of crushing the pipe if it was installed properly. Worst case if you crush the pipe you dig it up and replace that section. Never drive over a septic leach field.
Avoiding Excess Weight on Your Leach Field
While many professionals believe that a leach field could bear about 10,000 pounds of weight for a short period of time, it's often not worth the risk. While you can safely walk on your leach field, parking, driving, and building on the area above should be avoided.
In general, no, you shouldn't drive over a septic leach/drain field. If it's shallow (3 or 4 feet down) or poorly constructed, you could damage the piping. If it's shallow, you may compact the soils a bit (but soils ABOVE the gravel backfill don't matter, only those alongside the gravel backfill).
Things that should not be installed on top of your septic drain field include: Heavy equipment and vehicles, which can compact the soil and damage the drainfield pipes. Paving, such as asphalt or concrete, which prevents rainwater from reaching the soil in the drainfield, disrupting the natural filtration process.
What is allowed or restricted by a sewer easement? You may make use of the land over an easement if it does not result in significant interference with the easement. For example, modest landscaping and improvements such as lawns, small shrubs, driveways, and sidewalks are generally allowed.
Put plastic sheets, bark, gravel or other fill over the drainfield. Reshape or fill the ground surface over the drainfield and reserve area. However, just adding topsoil is generally OK if it isn't more than a couple of inches. Make ponds on or near the septic system and the reserve area.
In most cases, homeowners insurance does cover septic tank damage when it results from a sudden, unexpected event (as you might have noticed from the above list). However, home insurance is not likely to cover damage resulting from septic system problems caused by wear and tear or lack of maintenance.
Best Practices for Mowing Near a Septic System
We advise establishing a zone over and extending at least 10 feet around your drain field where you only plant grass and no heavy machinery rolls over it.
Typically, the drainfield consists of three to five trenches that are 18 to 24 inches deep, up to 100 ft long, with a perforated pipe in 12 to 18 inches deep gravel covered by 12 inches of soil.
Ride-on mowers and other garden care equipment will not harm your leach field. You should, however, stay away from it with cars, pick-up trucks, and rubber tired heavy equipment like backhoe loaders.
While a properly maintained drain field is designed to last up to 50 years, it's not likely that it will last much longer than that. If you're experiencing symptoms of drain field failure and you know that your drain field is getting up there in age, it might be wise to begin to budget for a drain field replacement.

Not only can the weight from the vehicle put stress on the tank and cause damage, it can also disrupt surrounding infrastructure, including pipes, leading to leaks and, in the worst-case scenario, major property damage. How much weight can you put on a septic tank?
Does homeowners insurance cover your sewer line if it's damaged? Damage to your sewer line may be covered by your policy if it is caused by perils such as hail or windstorms, explosions, lightning or fire, damages caused by vehicles, vandalism or falling objects.
Pipe for conveying liquids susceptible to freezing should be buried no less than 12" below the maximum frost level. Permanent lines subject to heavy traffic should have a minimum cover of 24". For light traffic, 12" to 18" is normally sufficient for small diameter pipe (typically < 3" diameter).
Septic tanks, distribution boxes and drainfields (a.k.a. leach fields) are buried just under the surface of the ground, which makes them easily damaged by driving vehicles, or operating heavy equipment over them. Driving over a drainfield can cause the drainage pipes to crack, and create leaks throughout the system.
To prevent compaction, do not allow any vehicles or heavy equipment on the mound. When mowing the lawn, use a hand mower, rather than a riding mower. In general, try to reduce the amount of foot traffic and other activity on the mound. This will also help protect the mound from losing soil to erosion.
While the large grassy area above your leach field may seem like the perfect place to build your garage, shed, or barn, building on or near your leach field is not recommended.
The best plants you can put on top of a septic drain or leach field are shallow-rooted herbaceous plants. These include perennials, bulbs, turf-grass, weeds, groundcovers, and more. A few examples are holly shrubs, boxwood shrubs, azalea shrubs, hollyhocks, wild violets, and spring bulbs.
Household septic tanks are typically pumped every three to five years. Alternative systems with electrical float switches, pumps, or mechanical components should be inspected more often, generally once a year. A service contract is important since alternative systems have mechanized parts.
A more complex French drain implements the use of perforated pipe at the bottom of the trench to help channel the water. A layer of gravel is placed on top of the pipe to keep out any debris.
Keeping trees at least 50 feet away from septic systems is ideal, but if you plan on growing plants like willows, shoot for 100 feet. Give your leach field a wide berth when planning out your landscape. Grasses, or even wildflowers, over your septic area make a better alternative.
