We use fire cement board because it gives you a nice straight finish and is heat resistant.
Logically, refractory mortar should be used anywhere where it will be exposed to very high temperatures.

While cement board is highly resistant to fire, it is not completely fireproof. Over prolonged exposure to intense heat, even cement board will eventually begin to deteriorate. However, its ability to resist fire for an extended period makes it an invaluable component in fire-rated assemblies.
Refractory Mortar
If you plan to use your fireplace frequently or have a wood-burning fireplace, consider using refractory mortar. Designed to withstand high temperatures without cracking or deteriorating, refractory mortar is resilient to thermal shock.
Materials such as ceramic tiles, natural stone, and metal are known for their high heat resistance capabilities, making them ideal choices for fireplace surrounds. Ceramic tiles, for instance, are excellent at withstanding high temperatures and are also easy to clean and maintain.

The H5 fireplace requires a 1/2” (13mm) thick non- combustible cement board or equivalent, to be used as a wall surface immediately above the unit—see diagram for minimum coverage. Extending the cement board well beyond the minimum shown will help avoid cracking due to differential expansion of materials.

Can USG Durock® Brand Cement Boards be used in gang showers, saunas, and steam rooms? Yes. Water does not affect the USG Durock® Brand panels themselves; however, because water could affect other materials, TCNA Handbook Guidelines recommend the use of a waterproof membrane in wet areas.
Cement board typically has a thermal conductivity (k-value) ranging from 0.18 to 0.35 Watts per metre-Kelvin (W/mK). Compared to concrete (1.0-1.8 W/mK), this relatively low thermal conductivity allows cement boards to provide some insulation value.

HardieBacker® 12mm cement backerboard is fire rated class A1, meaning the product is non-combustible. HardieBacker® 12mm cement backerboard is CE approved and BBA certified since May 2004. Hardiebacker say it is fine for up to 100 degrees centigrade (it will not set on fire but can crack).
HardieBacker® cement board has been evaluated by the BBA and approved with certificate no. 04/4100. The products meet the European standard for fibre cement - EN 12467 and its reaction to fire, in accordance with EN 13501-1, is A1,S1-d0. The product is therefore classified as fully non-combustible.
