Primer/Finish Systems
Regal® Select Exterior is self priming on most properly prepared substrates, including: wood, fiber cement board, hardboard, nonferrous metals and cured masonry surfaces. On bare substrates two coats are required; previously painted surfaces can be finished with 1 or 2 coats.
If your acrylic surface is glossy, rough up the surface with some sandpaper first and use a good primer to ensure proper adhesion for your latex paint.
Skipping primer may result in uneven or blotchy paint. While many of Benjamin Moore's paints are self-priming, we recommend a dedicated coat of a high-quality primer, like Fresh Start® High-Hiding All Purpose Primer. Primer is the best way to achieve a smooth finish.
To prevent thinner surfaces such as cardboard and wooden panels from warping, treat both sides with a primer (acrylic binder and/or gesso). Acrylic paint will not adhere well to smooth surfaces such as glass or plastic. Because the paint does not adhere well, it is easy to peel or scratch off during transport or use.
