First, an explanation, which was grounded in the reality we faced last fall. Despite creating the tabletop hydroponic gardening category 20 years ago, the market had been challenging these past few years. And that's why we made the tough decision to wind down the business.
– Scotts Miracle-Gro acquired AeroGarden in 2020, but announced the division would be shut down this year. Support for the products will still be available, but manufacturing of new ones will cease.
What is the disadvantage of AeroGardens? AeroGardens require a significant upfront investment compared to just buying indoor growing lights or growing things yourself outside. The standard AeroGarden Harvest model only holds room for 6 AeroGarden pods which doesn't allow you to grow much either.
Considering that a rather high portion of my electric bill is fixed, the cost of adding in an indoor garden is minimal. But exactly how much does an Aerogarden cost to run? About $1-3 dollars, depending on the size of the garden.
Flower varieties typically grow for 4-5 months and can last much longer depending on tending and care. Lettuces & Greens typically grow for about 4 months. Herbs typically grow for about 3-4 months and can last 6 months or more.
It's super easy to put together, and because the garden has a grow light, you can place it anywhere in your home, even if there's not a whole lot of natural light. This also means you can grow produce year-round! Not only is the AeroGarden easy to control, but it yields amazingly beautiful plants.
Mold, in general, tends to thrive in environments that are damp and warm; including packages of hydroponic grow sponges that are shipped during summer months in closed containers (i.e. our products, and all other AeroGarden compatible grow sponges).
Dish Sponges and Pool Noodles
You can buy a pack of inexpensive sponges and cut them down to fit the Aerogarden grow baskets. They don't provide the best airflow, but they're one of the most economical growing mediums. You could also re-purpose a pool noodle.

Scotts Miracle-Gro now owns all of hydroponics maker AeroGrow International after acquiring the final 20% stake. Scotts Miracle-Gro Co. has completed its acquisition of a maker of soilless indoor gardening equipment seven years after first investing.
Instead of growing in soil, the plants grow in a rich nutrient solution that delivers a consistent supply of food directly to each plant's roots. Each AeroGarden unit is designed for an automatically regulated hydroponic growing experience.
Aerogarden says you can use Vacation Mode to safely leave your plants away for about 2 weeks.
If you are growing in an AeroGarden Sprout, the light cycle is 16 hours per day and the aerator runs while the light is on. Please reach out to our Customer Service Team on the Aerogarden website with any further questions or concerns.
What Happens Next? The hydroponic plant-growing company is shutting down. Here's what to expect growing forward if you own any AeroGarden devices.
Sometimes people notice a white fuzz developing on the surface of their grow sponges. This is probably a beneficial fungi, and is in fact, a sign of healthy, organic, biological activity. It does not harm your plants, prevent germination, or in any way impact the quality or edibility of your plants.
Fill the bowl with either water and a ¼ cup of chlorine bleach OR 5 cups of distilled white vinegar (no need to use water if you're using the vinegar). Vinegar also helps prevent and clean up mineral deposits in your garden. Let the water pump or aerator circulate the solution for 5 minutes.
The AeroGarden light timer runs for 15 hours. Which 15 hours of the day is up to you. The manual comes with easy instructions on how to set your timer. If you've got your plants in a spot with little or no natural light, you could even have your light on at night while you sleep.
THE EASIEST PLANTS TO GROW IN AN AEROGARDEN. Hands down, the absolute best plants to grow in any kind of hydroponic system/smart garden are herbs, specifically annual herbs that are out of season, plus the perennial herbs you use the most while cooking. The second-best plants to grow would be salad greens.
The best time to make the move from an AeroGarden seed starting system to soil is when the seedling grows its first set of true leaves. At this stage, roots have penetrated the grow sponges, but they are not yet long and entangled with one another.
