A standard, 7.5-foot, manually operated commercial roll up door needs at least fifteen inches of headroom. If the door has an automatic opener, it will require at least eighteen inches. Roll up doors also require a small amount of horizontal headroom, though nowhere near as much as sectional or overhead doors.
Roller Doors
In most cases, approximately 400mm of head room is required to accomodate the rolled-up curtain. When the door is in the fully opened position, the opening height is normally reduced by approximately 70mm.
Typically, you will need 300mm (205mm for a compact door) of headroom for an insulated roller garage door and 450mm for a single skin steel shutter or door. If you do not have this much space available then let the Royal Industrial Doors team know and we'll see what we can do.
Six-foot rollup doors need at least 16 inches of headroom, while a 20-foot stainless-steel door requires 25 inches of vertical headroom. Extreme® 300 Series: Doors in the Extreme® 300 Series can be 6 feet to 20 feet tall, requiring either 15 or 19 inches, depending on whether the door is 6 feet or 20 feet.
Minimum Clearance for Garage Door Installations. You'll want a minimum of 15 inches of overhead clearance for a standard garage door with an electric opener.
For the aluminium double skinned type roller door using a 77mm slat with a depth of 19mm (general size used) the headroom required is 300mm minimum in order to get almost the full height as ordered.
There should be a 2mm or 3mm gap between the door and the frame on both sides and the top. If you do need to cut the door down to size, keep in mind that you need to cut all four sides of the door equally whenever possible to retain an accurate shape or pattern if the door is panelled.

Size. When choosing your roller garage door, it is important to choose a garage door that fits the space. Having only a fixed sized option by a manufacturer can cause you more problems than originally thought. If the door doesn't fit properly, this can lead to gaps, drafts or the overall door not working as it should.

Here are the headroom requirements for each track type: Standard radius: On a 2-inch track, you need 12 inches of headroom for a 12-inch radius and 14 ¼ inches of headroom for a 15-inch radius. On a 3-inch track, you need 16 ½ inches of headroom.
Steel sectional garage doors have wider panels than those of rolling steel doors, and rest parallel to the ceiling when retracted. Like steel roller doors, steel sectional garage door benefits are versatile enough to cater to your unique needs. For instance, you can opt to include windows, insulation or added hardware.
A well fitted door should have a 2mm gap on either side and at the top. The gap at the bottom will depend on the thickness of your flooring/carpet. Plane the door as required, using an electric plane will help you get an even finish, and sand for a smooth finish.
Limitations in Design and Customizations
Some roll-up doors may not offer insulation properties, reducing energy efficiency options for customers. These limitations mean that certain architectural styles may not be compatible with roll-up doors, and customization options may be limited.
Coil coating and paint costs are key drivers in the price of your roll up door. Typically paint costs only increase due to the raw materials being utilized in other markets such as batteries and electric cars. Each of these markets utilize the same resins that are part of the ingredients to make paint.

When deciding on the type of door to fit your garage, it's best to keep in mind that a roller garage door will encroach on around 450mm of headroom, directly above the garage door opening. The motor, or garage door opener, is situated to the side of the door itself.
Door openings shall have a minimum clear opening width of 32 inches; however, if the doorway is more than 24 inches deep, then a minimum clearance of 36 inches is required. The clear opening is measured from the face of the door to the stop of the frame while the door is opened to 90 degrees.
Regardless of the door frame and door con- struction, and the level of fire rating of swinging doors, NFPA 80 limits the maximum clearance dimension between the bottom edges the doors and the floor surface to 3/4-in.
One critical aspect to emphasize is the gap between the door and the floor, which should be between a half-inch and three-quarters of an inch for optimal functionality.
There should be a 5" distance between the top of the door and the highest hinge, and 10" from the bottom of the door to the lowest hinge. All hinges in between should be equally spaced from one another. Leave a small gap between the door's frame and the edge of the hinge's leaf.
A professional will need about a day to hang a new door. For an amateur, it takes as long as it takes. This is fine, albeit inconvenient when hanging internal doors. For external doors, you can't afford to leave the job unfinished.
