Neither refrigerant is universally "better," but R-410A is the superior choice for most modern air conditioning systems. The best option depends entirely on whether you are replacing an older R-22 system or installing a brand-new setup.
R407C won't work with R410A as the discharge pressure, power consumption is also not the same. The popular recommended Freon that is compatible with R410A is R-32 and it has significantly less amount of GWP than R410A. For R407C, R134A, R125, and R32 are compatible and can go together in the natural environment.
The thermal stability of R-407C is such that when exposed to high temperatures, its vapor will decompose, resulting in toxic and irritating compounds. The lack of chlorine in R-407C prevents phosgene gas from forming when exposed to high temperatures, but the gases that form are nonetheless very toxic.
The use of R-407C and other high global warming potential (GWP) hydrofluorocarbon refrigerants is being phased out worldwide in accordance with the Kigali Amendment to the Montreal Protocol.
Freon™ 407C exhibits similar performance to HCFC-22, while Freon™ 410A gives significantly higher pressure and refrigeration capacity.
This popular refrigerant is currently being phased out from use in all commercial refrigeration. Those most effected by the phase out include the hospitality, supermarkets, retail, food processing, education and healthcare sectors.
Opteon™ XP20 (R-449C) refrigerant is a hydrofluoroolefin (HFO) option that replaces R-22 and R-407C in residential and commercial air conditioners, as well as direct expansion chillers. It has similar performance and properties to R-22 and R-407C and can be used in both retrofit and new equipment.
This group of synthetic refrigerants is not subject to a ban on use. This means that installations using R134a, R407C and R410A can simply be refilled after 2030. However, there will be significantly less synthetic refrigerant available in the future due to production limitations.
Starting in January 2025, the production and import of R-410A for use in new HVAC systems will be prohibited. This means that all new commercial and industrial air conditioning units must utilize alternative refrigerants with lower environmental impact, such as A2L refrigerants like R-32 or R-454B.
Freon™ 407C has been a popular R-22 replacement because of its properties, which include: Similar cooling capacity, energy efficiency, and pressures as R-22 in systems. An ability to be topped off after a leak, multiple times, with minimal impact on system performance.
A2L refrigerants, the new refrigerants for 2026, will replace R-410A in new systems. A lot about A2L refrigerants is explained in their name: The “A” means low toxicity. The “2L” is a safety classification, indicating it is mildly flammable.
R22 uses mineral oil. R407C requires POE oil. Mixing them prevents oil circulation, starves the compressor, and causes mechanical failures.
After replacing an R22 compressor with R407C, monitor both low and high side pressures carefully. At 86°F ambient, expect a low side pressure around 70-80 psi and a high side near 200-250 psi, but verify with manufacturer specs.
Short answer: Yes. Eligible R410A systems manufactured before January 1, 2025, can still be installed in 2026 under the Technology Transitions Rule issued by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. There is no nationwide ban on the installation of compliant R410A equipment.
From 1st January 2020, new regulations state that certain equipment containing R404a gas can no longer be repaired or serviced with fresh gas. If you rely on equipment containing 404a, you may need to upgrade or replace it.
Replacement Refrigerants
R-454B and R-32 are the two refrigerant that's most likely to replace R-410a.
R-454B. R-454B is a next-generation refrigerant designed to replace R-410A in HVAC systems. R-454B is a hydrofluoroolefin (HFO) blend refrigerant, composed of a mixture of R-32 (difluoromethane) and R-1234yf (2,3,3,3-tetrafluoropropene).
Daikin is considered the No. 1 AC brand globally, known for its advanced inverter technology, superior energy efficiency, and durable performance. The brand is a leader in HVAC solutions, offering cutting-edge cooling systems that provide excellent performance while reducing power consumption.
The 3-minute rule is a simple but important guideline: wait at least three minutes after turning your air conditioner off before turning it back on. That short pause gives the refrigerant pressure in the system time to equalize.
The general observed trend was a drop in both capacity and efficiency and also in suction and discharge pressures. It was due to a loss ofR32 which is the highest pressure component in the mixture. Flammability issue may have to be considered for vapor leaks due to the higher percentage of R32 in the leaking vapor.
R407C was developed in the early 1990's as a non-ozone depleting alternative to R22 for commercial air-conditioning, heat pumps and medium temperature refrigeration.
Direct exposure to refrigerant may cause frostbite; may displace oxygen and cause rapid suffocation. Refrigerant R-407C is extremely stable however, formation of toxic and corrosive gases is possible during contact with extremely hot surfaces or in case of fire.
Mixing R22 with R407C
According to the 609 EPA rule, mixing refrigerants is illegal and anybody caught doing so will be heavily fined. Although you may this restriction is primarily political we would like to give you a basic education to explain the two most devastating effects of such action: To the environment.
R-407C is entirely immiscible with mineral oil, so a complete oil change to POE will be necessary when retrofitting an R-22 installation. After changing the oil, it pairs well with R22. If you prefer not to change the oil, M099 is a suitable alternative, though you might experience up to a 10% reduction in capacity.
How much is R-22 per pound? Since R-22/Freon® was phased out, prices have risen over the years and will continue to rise. In 2025, R-22 can cost anywhere from $100 to $250 per pound installed. In general, cooling systems require 2-4 pounds per ton of capacity.
