The company says: ``Best results for stain blocking are obtained with no thinning. However, KILZ 2 Latex primer and KILZ Premium primer may be thinned up to 10% per gallon with water.''

Prepare the primer
If it is on the thick side, you should dilute it to ensure effortless application with your paint sprayer.

To thin down emulsion ready for spraying, the best ratio is 70/30. That is 70% of paint and 30% water. Some painters prefer an 80/20 ratio, but this greatly depends on the paint you are using and how thick it was, to begin with.
Master stock primers newly suspended in water should be allowed to sit at room temperature for 10 minutes before they are used for working stock dilutions. Mix well before making working stock dilutions. Dilute the primer master stock in a sterile microcentrifuge tube 1:10 with sterile molecular grade water.

Depending on how strong or bold the previous color is, it may be necessary to apply more than one coat of primer. However, it is not necessary to over apply the primer with so many coats. As long as the primer applies uniformly over the previous color, then one or two coats should be sufficient.

KILZ 2 ALL-PURPOSE Primer (Previously KILZ 2 Latex) is a fast-drying, water-based, multi-surface primer-sealer-stainblocker with excellent adhesion, mildew resistance, sealing properties and very mild odor.
There were some water marks from prior leakage and I used the KILZ aerosol spray to cover and prime these marks. It was very easy for this novice to use and did an excellent job of covering the marks. Needless to say she was right. After a 10 minute prep and spray, my stains were gone.

Divide the area you want to spray by the area noted on the pesticide label. This will give you a dilution factor. Example: If you want to spray an area that is 400 ft2 and the label says apply 3 ounces of product per 1,000 ft2, your dilution factor is 0.4 (400 ft2 ÷ 1,000 ft2 = a dilution factor of 0.4).
Mineral spirits are a more refined paint thinner distilled from petroleum. The main benefit is that the odor isn't as strong because it doesn't contain other chemical additives, like benzene. However, because they're refined, they aren't as powerful as other kind of paint thinner.
It also dries quickly and provides a mildew resistant coating. It can be used under water-based or oil-based paint.
Shelf life under normal conditions is 2 years unopened. Partially used cans might develop skinning if not tightly sealed.
Primer normally has a ration of 2 to 1 so you need 2 parts primer to 1 part thinner. TIP: Ed also adds: "It is very important that you follow the instructions otherwise you will not get the correct application. When mixing, it is best to use a calibrated mixing cup to be as accurate as possible.
For example, primers are usually thicker than the accompanying paint so you should use a 1.7 or 1.8 mm tip to prime most surfaces. Most painters will stay in the range of 1.2 to 2.0 mm unless the paint being applied is specialized.
For every gallon of paint, put in 12-13 ounces of water. This is 10% of the volume of the paint for every gallon you're using. It may be beneficial to use a paint strainer to make sure you're achieving the right consistency for your sprayer tips. Use a stir stick to mix the paint with the cup of water properly.
