Simply add a dose of hard coat to your choice of latex paint any allow to cure according the paint manufacturer's directions. Ideal for painting surfaces of furniture, cabinets or trim where extra durability is desired.
ADD HARD COAT - Add 16 oz. of the Hard Coat latex paint additive (1/2 quart) per gallon of latex paint and mix well. Paint as desired. For best results, use the Hard Coat additive in all coats of paint applied.
If you need the paint to dry faster, you can use a product called Rapid Hardener. This product is designed to harden fast-drying paints. It contains a chemical that accelerates the drying process. To make sure the paint will dry fast, use an airbrush instead of a brush when applying the paint.
Add a Protective Topcoat: Apply a clear protective topcoat, such as a polyurethane or acrylic sealer, over the flat paint. This can significantly increase durability and washability.
The biggest influence on the durability of your chosen paint is the binder (resin) which varies between products and the gloss level the paint is formulated at. As a general rule if durability is measured as time to the onset of chalking then the higher the gloss level of the paint the more durable the paint will be.
Applying a Sealer
These products create barriers preventing moisture penetration thus prolonging life expectancy on flat paint finishes.
The incorporation of metal salts or driers accelerates the drying process. This in turn increases the hardness of alkyd systems. For example, metals like cobalt or manganese. Adding functional glycol ethers also increases the hardness and block resistance of coatings.
Oil-based paint can be dried using the kitty litter approach. Liquid oil-based paint cannot be brought to the Transfer Station for hardening. It can, however be brought to Household Hazardous Waste drop-offs.
When paint remains tacky to the touch and refuses to dry, the issue often lies with quality of the paint. But the problem may also be linked to your painting environment (in terms of humidity and temperature) or application issues like failing to prepare the surface properly or not letting the paint dry between coats.
The basic idea is to have a flat, non-porous container (with low sides so you can get in there with a palette knife to mix your paints), lined with a soft absorbent material (soaked with water) which is then topped by a paper that will allow a very small of moisture to penetrate, keeping your paint wet.
One common method to fix faded clearcoats is through a process known as compounding and polishing. This technique involves using a specialized compound to gently remove the damaged clearcoat layer, followed by polishing to restore shine and smoothness to the paint surface.
Semi-Gloss
This degree of durability makes gloss paint a popular choice for areas subjected to heavy wear and tear, such as doors, trim, and cabinetry.
Additives are specified as low-level components that deliver certain paint properties like levelling, mildew resistance, deforming, and good flow.
Mix saw dust or cat litter into the paint. Stir with a stick until well blended. (Alternatively, you can use a commercially made paint hardener, purchased from a paint or hardware store) Add more sawdust or litter as necessary, until the consistency of the mixture is crumbly.
Your clumping litter clumps so tightly that it's creating cement-like rocks in the litterbox. These can be painful to step on, making your cat uncomfortable entering the litterbox. You'll want to either change your litter or make sure that you're scooping twice a day.
Look for higher-quality paints with a high level of acrylic resin. Resin makes paint more washable and durable.
A hardener, also known as paint hardener, is a chemical product that is added to paint (in 2-component products) to cause a chemical reaction that leads to hardening (polymerisation), without which the paint (e.g. a primer paint or clearcoat) would not dry.
Baking soda Add baking soda to your paint to thicken it and add texture.
Water-based sealers or top coats are a great option for most painted furniture projects. When applied they will add a layer of protection without altering the color of the paint. They are also less toxic and have easier cleanup when compared to their oil-based counterparts.
If you want to change the sheen, you can re-coat with a different sheen over top. The second layer of top coat will replace the appearance of the first. Sand lightly with a used 220 sanding PAD to knock down the original finish before re-coating. It may take two or 3 coats to get complete coverage.
Without a strong alkali-resistant sealant, the top paint coat will deteriorate, resulting in ugly and uneven patches. Walls in damp areas such as the bathroom are prone to staining and peeling. A water-based interior wall sealer protects your new paint from moisture attacks and ensures that it lasts much longer.
