Baking soda and vinegar: For both top-load and front-load washers, start by adding 1/4 cup of baking soda directly into the washer drum. Then, pour 2 cups of white vinegar into the detergent dispenser. Run a hot wash cycle without any laundry.
To fix this problem you can run 2/3 cup of bleach in a very short cycle and let it sit for 15 minutes before the rinse and drain. There is also a product called Active washing machine cleaner which is designed for this purpose. You may have to repeat this a couple of times the first time you do this.
