For the best insecticides that instantly kill spider mites on contact: two DIY options are rubbing alcohol or insecticidal soap and two store-bought options (both available in New Zealand), that I've used are Enspray 99 or BioNeem. A quick word of caution when it comes to neem oil products however.
Using 70% isopropyl alcohol is an effective way to get rid of spider mites. Simply spray your plant down with the alcohol and the spider mites will die off. This method should be repeated every other day until you no longer see any signs of spider mites.
Using a 16 ounce water spray bottle, combine 12 ounces of water, 4 ounces of 92% Isopropyl Rubbing Alcohol and 2 tablespoons of Dawn Dish Detergent. You can use other dish detergents, if you do not have Dawn, but we find that the classic, blue Dawn is the best.
Fortunately, some essential oils have the ability to deter or kill spider mites. Effective oils include lemon, eucalyptus, pennyroyal, peppermint, and rosemary.
Any insecticides containing pyrethrum, spinosad or bifenthrin would kill spider mites on contact. Captain jack's dead bug brew contains spinosad and would do the job just fine.
Step 2: How to Treat Spider Mites on Lucky Bamboo
This works for mild infestations. This is effective also: Mix 1/4 cup apple cider vinegar (white vinegar is fine too) with 1 cup of water, 1 t of baking soda & a few drops of mild dish soap into a spray bottle.
Phytoseiulus persimilis predators are the fastest control for Spider Mite infestations. The next fastest establishing predator found in the study was the Amblyseius californicus (also named Neoseiulus californicus). This is the predator we use in our Spider Mite Preventative System.
Common insect predators of pest mites include bigeyed bugs, brown lacewings, dustywings, green lacewings, minute pirate bugs, mite midges, the spider mite destroyer lady beetle (ladybug), spider mite rove beetle, and sixspotted thrips.
Water plants with one part 3% hydrogen peroxide to 4 parts water. You can also put some in a spray bottle to spritz the areas on the leaves with bugs. My plants have never been happier. This is also great for fungus growing in/on your soil.
Mite flare is often attributed to pesticides killing predatory insects and mites that would have otherwise kept the mites in check. It can also happen because some insecticides cause mites to reproduce more quickly than they otherwise would (spider mites are not insects).
If you spot spider mite evidence (see below) on your plants, even if there are only a few tiny mites, you can count on having an infestation soon. Spider mites hatch and mature to egg-laying capabilities in as little as 3 days, and they can live for weeks. This means that the population grows quickly and exponentially.
Alcohol kills the spider mites and helps you wipe away webs to wipe out as much of the population as possible. Alcohol can, however, be harsh on plants as well.
Mixing liquid dish soap and water is a DIY way to take care of invasive spider mites as the soap will stick to and suffocate them. Combine one quart of lukewarm water with one teaspoon of liquid dish soap, shake the solution up, and pour it into a spray bottle.
But one place they do not enter your home is through the soil in your houseplants. “I'm going to bust a myth,” says Opela. “Spider mites are not breeding in your soil. Don't worry about treating your soil,” she says.
Plants with mite damage limited to a few leaves will usually recover without special care.
If a treatment for mites is necessary, use selective materials, preferably insecticidal soap or insecticidal oil. Both petroleum-based horticultural oils and plant-based oils such as neem, canola, or cottonseed oils are acceptable.
Using Home Remedies to Kill Spider Mite Populations
A step-by-step procedure on making spider mites spray with a Dawn recipe includes: Add three tablespoons of Dawn dish soap to a gallon of water. Pluck out all the leaves with severe spider mite damage due to infestation.
Likewise, you can help repel spider mites by planting cilantro and dill, two herbs they dislike.
Naturally derived miticidal sprays like neem oil, pyrethrins, azadirachtin and horticultural oil can be sprayed directly onto adult mites, larvae, nymphs and eggs to kill on contact. Apply to active spider mite infestations at 3-day intervals until control is achieved.
Spider mites cannot live on humans because they need plant materials to sustain themselves. They use plants to spin their webs and lay their eggs, and they feed off the plants cells to survive. Spider mites can crawl or use clothing or other items as transportation to new plants, but they cannot live on humans.
Appearance of predatory mites
Adults: Slightly larger than spider mites; pear-shaped; shiny translucent white but turning pale tan, orangey, reddish or green after feeding; eight legs; wingless.
They frequently kill plants or cause serious stress to them. Spider mites have tiny mouthparts modified for piercing individual plant cells and removing the contents. This results in tiny yellow or white speckles. When many of these feeding spots occur near each other, the foliage takes on a yellow or bronzed cast.
