You should aim to keep the chlorine level at between 1 and 3 ppm. We suggest shocking the pool every week to two weeks; with hot weather or increased use, you may need to shock more often. When tabs run out, replace them.

Hot & Rainy Months: Weekly
During the hotter months of the year, or when the forecast shows a chance of rain, shock your pool weekly. These conditions can significantly increase the chance of algae growth, and a weekly dose of shock will help keep the green away.
The simplest strategy is to follow them, remembering the two golden rules of adding chemicals: only add chemicals to a pool that is running, and only add chemicals to water, not water to chemicals.
Typically, you will need to add chlorine tabs or granules to your pool on a constant basis. About every two weeks, you will need to shock your pool with a higher dose of chlorine. This raises the pH levels quickly and is especially important in sunny weather when the chlorine can break down.
Is it possible to shock your pool too much? Yes—excessive shocking of your pool will keep it at an elevated chlorine level. This will cause irritation of the skin and eyes as well as excessive wear and tear on your pool filter system, including excessive corrosion of all metal parts.
Ideally, you should shock your pool at night, so the sun cannot interfere and destroy the active chemicals before they can do their job. Then, you can add your chlorine post-shock after the chlorine levels have fallen below 5 ppm.

1) What is the difference between chlorine and shock? Do I need to use both? Chlorine is a sanitizer, and (unless you use Baquacil products) is necessary for maintaining a clear and healthy pool. Shock is chlorine, in a high dose, meant to shock your pool and raise the chlorine level quickly.
Begin the pool start-up process by adding some scale or stain preventative before any other chemical. If your pool consists of new plaster, this step should always go first. Make sure that the water is properly tested to determine how much chemicals you should add.
Add the shock to your pool water
Make sure your pool pump is running at full speed to maximise circulation. For best coverage, walk around the pool and gradually pour the shock into the water. Brush it around to distribute the solution evenly.
It's not too uncommon for your pool water to be slightly cloudy after shocking, especially if you use a granular chlorine shock. If the water looks good and you simply want to boost the chlorine level a bit, add 1 bag per 20,000 gallons. If the water is hazy or cloudy, use a full bag per 10,000 gallons. Or, if there is algae, use 2–6 lbs per 10,000 gallons, depending on the extent of the algae bloom.
If the pool water is hazy even after the pool shock, it is an indication of imbalanced levels of pH and total alkalinity. Usually the high level of pH causes calcium accumulation in the pool, affecting the clarity of the water. The high pH makes the water basic/alkaline and the low pH turns it acidic.
Algaecides act as a backup to your normal sanitization program and prevent algae from starting and growing in the pool. Algaecide should be added after every shock treatment.
Each 1inch tablet treats about 1,000 gallons, so that pool would need 5 initially to maintain a 1-4ppm residual. More tablets may be necessary depending on other factors in the pool and the environment.
While it may be tempting to toss chlorine tablets into the skimmer for convenience, doing so can have serious repercussions for your pool and equipment. From fluctuating chlorine levels to corrosive water chemistry, and equipment damage, the pitfalls of skimmer placement far outweigh any perceived benefits.
Chlorine can irritate the eyes, skin, hair, and teeth. Swimming occasionally doesn't cause significant side effects. People who swim frequently are more likely to experience chlorine side effects. Chlorinated water is considered safe when pools have the correct concentration of chlorine.
