OVERHANG - The countertop extends over the edge of the sink on all sides by approximately 1/8" - 1/4". Use caution with this installation to be sure that accessories such as colanders or cutting boards will fit properly.
A zero reveal is a counter that is flush with the sink's rim. This is the most stylish and practical reveal for an undermount sink. It's free from cracks and crevices where debris can get stuck, making your sink very easy to clean. And, it will add high-end appeal to your home.
The limiting factor on how close to the edge the sink cutout can be is almost always the risk of cracking the rail during fabrication, transport, or installation. A general rule of thumb is 4" for a typical 2 bowl kitchen sink and 3-1/2" for a vanity sink.
Amount of overhang you have is the most important factor to consider in deciding whether you need support brackets. Most granite fabricators will recommend support brackets on overhangs over 12″ however, solely based on the overhang amount.
Granite Thickness and Overhangs
Granite thickness – granite tops with a thickness of 3 cm can have an 8-10 inch overhang without additional supports. If your granite top has a 2 cm thickness, we recommend attaching a support system should the overhang exceed 6 inches.
Standard countertop overhang is 1 ½ inches.
Keep in mind that this is 1 ½ inches over the front edge of the base cabinet. While some countertops may have different overhang measurements, this is the number that is seen as standard for homes.
In most cases, support is placed underneath unless the overhang is 6 inches or less. According to the Marble Institute of America, you can safely overhang granite that is 1 ¼ inches thick up to 10 inches without support.
The maximum overhang is no more than 1/3 of the total dimension of the countertop – not to exceed 15”. Overhang greater than 15” requires corbels or flush mounted steel supports. Supports must be designed to bear the weight of the countertop and be mounted to studs or equivalent load bearing structure.
1. Purpose. If the counter is to be used for food prep, the standard measurement for the overhang is 1-1/2 inches. This is long enough to provide some protection for your cabinets without forming an obstruction.
A typical overhang for a comfortable seating area should be around 25-30cm (10-12”), this should leave enough knee room and adequate space between the countertop edge and the person seated. Therefore, as the depth of the overhang increases, so does the comfort and usability of the bar.
OVERHANG - The countertop extends over the edge of the sink on all sides by approximately 1/8" - 1/4". Use caution with this installation to be sure that accessories such as colanders or cutting boards will fit properly.
The oval sink is also the most practical sink shapes amongst undermount sinks. The oval shape allows the sink to be wide without having to take as much space on your counter as the rectangular sinks. In addition, the vast majority of oval bowls swoops down which allows for better drainage than the flat bottom sinks.
In a negative reveal, the countertop extends slightly over the top edge of the sink on all sides. However, an overreaching edge is at risk for chipping. Without thorough cleaning, there is also a chance mold may start to appear under the edge because of the sink's positioning. Negative Sink Reveal.
One reason so many people are turning to undermount sinks for their kitchen remodels is that of the seamless style. Because the sink is mounted underneath the counter, the lip of it is flush against the countertop.
5.8 - Clean off silicone residue on the edge of the sink. 5.9 - Apply some silicone to the nuts. 5.10 - Wait an hour before turning the counter over and placing it on the cabinets. 5.11 - Wait 24 hours before using the sink.
If your island has seating, the counter should overhang at least 15 inches. An island with a taller height for bar stool seating should be 42 inches high and the overhang should be at least 12 inches. An island with a sink or stove should be larger.
Different countertop materials have different requirements. Solid Surface countertops can overhang 6 inches without additional support (e.g. plywood decking). 3 cm Quartz (engineered stone) can handle a 14 inch overhangs and 3 cm Granite overhangs should not exceed a 10 inch overhang without additional support.
In general, the recommended countertop overhang is between 1 and 1.5 inches. 'The standard overhang measurement is based on the fact that most people find this distance be the perfect place to rest their forearms while food prep is taking place,' notes Chris Alexakis, founder of CabinetSelect.
Dishwashers. Not all kitchens have dishwashers, but if you do, your granite countertops will probably go right over it. This means a little over 24 inches of countertop space with no cabinet underneath that will need additional support.
You must be thinking about standing or sitting on your countertops and unsure whether your countertops will take the weight, right? Granite is fairly thick, often at the very least ¾ of an inch. If the weight is evenly distributed over a large area, the countertops can hold up to 1000 pounds.
Ideally, a fully functioning countertop can be flush with the cabinets. An ideal measurement must be followed before doing so – the handle of the cabinets must be between 1” and 2” from the kitchen countertop overhang. The primary purpose here must be the functionality of the cabinets and saving space.
Granite Bracket Thickness
They brackets are under a floating countertop, so the ascetic isn't too important. Since these brackets are mostly hidden, we highly recommend using 3/8″ or 1/2″ thicknesses, which are our two thicker models.
The bar top overhang should be a minimum of 8-1/2” and could be as much as 10” so your knees do not hit the bar front. For our extra tall customers the 10” overhang maybe necessary.
A method to calculate the correct overhang to provide the proper shading is to multiply the distance from the sill of the glass to the soffit by a factor based on the angles of the sun. There are different factors for each latitude because the sun is at different angles at each latitude.
