The following are general minimum clearances for ranges: 1 ½ inches to nearest adjacent sidewall above the cooktop on both sides. 30 inches between the cooktop and a cabinet. 0 inches for sides below the cooktop.
Guidelines recommend 15” of space on either one or both sides of an oven, or if the oven is in a tall cabinet and this is not possible, to have 15” of landing space no more than 48” in front of the oven as long as it does not open into the main walkway.
Allow at least 15 to 18 inches of counter space on one side of the oven. Allow counter space on both sides of the stove or stovetop – 12 to 18 inches on one side and 15 to 24 on the other.
Ideally, you have countertop space on both sides of the stove, although you may not have a lot of options in a small kitchen. At the very least, you should have enough counter space beside the oven so that you can put down a heavy turkey or roast after you've pulled it out of the oven.
The minimum clearance required directly above the location of the cooktop is 750 mm (30 inches) from the level of the cooktop burners or elements to framing, finishes and cabinetry.
30" of air clearance is required between the cooktop surface and bottom of an unprotected wood or metal cabinet above. 0" of air clearance is needed for the sides of the Range below the cooktop surface.
You must have a non-combustible hearth or flooring that extends at least 18 inches in front of the stove and 8 inches past the sides and back. If any sparks escape the stove or the flooring gets too hot, this clearance can protect against fire.
Stove dimensions can vary between the stove size itself and the cutout measurements. For example, a 30-inch stove may actually measure at 29⅞ inches wide, but it will require a 30-inch cutout for installation. It's important to check the exact specifications of each stove to make sure it will fit your available space.
600mm of vertical clearance to a combustible surface, and 200mm of horizontal distance to a vertical surface. If these measurements can't be met, the surface in question must be protected with a fire resistant material in accordance with AG/601.
Most cooktops are top mounted (proud mounted) on to the countertop, but recently flush mounted installations have been popping up in Kitchen design. Flat top electric or induction cooktops were the first cooktops to be installed this way.
For safety and efficiency, allow adequate bench space for preparation (80-140cem between sink and hotplates, 30cm at each side of the cooktop) and serving (300mm for two plates, double for four), and at least 450mm set down next to the fridge, pantry and wall oven. The recommended counter depth is 600mm.
The 3x4 Rule. The most important rule is the one that applies to all home cooks: You need three separate counters, and they should be about four feet long. Call it the 3x4 Rule.
At a minimum, there should be at least 42 inches of space between a kitchen island and the nearest countertop. If you have an oven that opens into this space, you will need even more room, at least 48 inches.
There is usually around a 2.5mm gap on each side of the range for the cabinetry. Depending on the model and the cabinet makers, some may require a larger gap (up to 10mm) to protect the cabinetry from heat damage.
Many installers may recommend a distance of 3-6 inches of space being the minimum. However, we always recommend increasing that to around nine inches of open space. The key here is to make this decision with the safety of the occupants in mind.

Household cooking appliances shall have a vertical clearance above the cooking top of not less than 30 inches (760 mm) to combustible material and metal cabinets.
Most standard stoves are 30 inches wide, around 25-27 inches deep (excluding handles and knobs) and 36 inches tall (excluding control panels). These standard stove sizes are designed to fit standard cabinet cutouts that are 34-1/4 inches wide, 24 inches deep and 36 inches tall.
A 30-inch wall oven may require a cabinet size that's approximately 33 inches wide. A general rule of thumb is to add an extra 3 inches wider than the wall oven. For instance, with a 27-inch wall oven, you'll want around a 30-inch cabinet size.
It is possible to replace a 30" cooktop with a 36" model if you have the space for it in your kitchen. If the cabinet that holds your old cooktop is 32" or smaller, you will have to do some remodeling of your cabinetry to make room for a larger appliance.
Air gaps are sometimes specified in stove instruction manuals but often are not. Sometimes they are “recommended”. Usually recommendations for distances to non-combustibles are between 5cm and 15cm.
Depending on the stove's output this can be anywhere between 300-600mm+. It should be noted that there is no 'legal' minimum distance to combustibles, only what's recommended by the manufacturer and the stove installer, but these guidelines are there to keep you and your home safe and they are worth adhering to.
All combustible materials, wood- work, unprotected walls, furniture, firewood, etc., should be no closer than 36 inches to a wood stove. A stove pipe should not be closer than 18 inches to an unprotected ceiling.
