Instead of replacing batteries after 24 hours of use, you're always replacing them after only 12 hours. Some devices are sensitive to voltage. By combining an old and a new battery, the voltage will be lower and the device will be less effective.

Batteries eventually leaking or corroding is a relatively common occurrence, especially familiar with alkaline AA cells if they're left unattended for long enough. In short, the reason alkaline batteries leak is that they're continually self-discharging in tiny increments, even when not in use.
In summary, AA batteries are typically considered dead or depleted when their voltage drops below 1.0-1.2 volts for alkaline batteries and below 1.0 volts for rechargeable batteries.
If the reading is more than 1.3V for alkaline battery (not rechargeable battery) then the battery still has some juice left in it. Otherwise, you have to discard off.
Alkaline batteries: These can last 5-10 years in storage under optimal conditions. Lithium batteries (non-rechargeable): Lithium batteries typically last 10-15 years if stored correctly, with minimal self-discharge.
These batteries last as long and work as well as Duracell and Energizer batteries at a much lower price. The other brands spend tons of money on advertising which increases their prices. Rayovac is a well priced batteries just as good as the top brands.
Duracell uses Duralock Power Preserve Technology, whereas Energizer operates PowerSeal. In terms of power longevity, Duracell seems to have that advantage. Energizer has a longer storage lifespan and wins the price battle, which may be the deciding factor for most people.

Lithium batteries generally last longer and perform better than other types of batteries. Like lead-acid batteries, for example. Lithium batteries currently have the longest lifespan of all available deep-cycle batteries. Many can last between 3,000 and 5,000 partial cycles.
