Often, it will look something like this. 12.5% Liquid Chlorine Pool Shock – Normal Dosage: 1 gallon of shock per 10,000 gallons of water. Shock Dosage: 2 gallons of shock per 10,000 gallons of water.
Calculate: 1 bag for each 10,000 gallons, per week or per month. Example: 2.5 bags per week for 20 weeks, or 50 lbs. Or 2.5 bags per month for 5 months, or 12.5 lbs. Recommendation: Get a 50 lb bucket of shock chlorine if you expect to shock weekly, or for 5 monthly shocks, you could buy the 12 Pack of pool shock.
A good rule to remember is to use one bag of shock (1 gallon of liquid chlorine) per 10,000 gallons.
Typically for granular shock, you'll need one pound for every 10,000 to 13,500 gallons of pool water.
Can you put too much shock in a pool? SKIMMER NOTES: It's unlikely but it could happen. It would take a lot of shock to really make the water unsafe for swimming. The best way to make sure you're safe to swim is to test your pool water and make sure free chlorine levels are between 1-4ppm for healthy swimming.
Running your filter after shocking your pool is a must and is just as important to your pool as shocking it is. Be sure to run your filter for at least 6 hours, but shoot for 24 hours to several days, if your pool is particularly dirty or has algae, to properly circulate the chlorine and clean the water.
Shock is chlorine, in a high dose, meant to shock your pool and raise the chlorine level quickly. Chlorine tabs (placed in a chlorinator, floater, or skimmer basket) maintain a chlorine residual in the water. You do need to use both tabs and shock.
To superchlorinate, add AT LEAST 2.5 ounces (5 tablespoons, 75 grams) of chlorine for every 100 gallons (400 litres) of spa water or part thereof. Adding more is fine and never a bad idea.
If you need to mildly shock a 30,000-gallon pool by raising the free chlorine concentration to 5 ppm, you need 2.5 gallons of bleach. To raise it to 10 ppm, you need 5 gallons.
The most important factor though is the size of the pool. You'll need about 52-104 oz of liquid chlorine per 10,000 gallons of water. This amount should get the chlorine level to between 5 and 10 ppm.
Once the pool is full it's unlikely to have much (if any) chlorine. That's why it's recommended to use a “shock” or starter dose once you have your pool up. This will help prevent algae and bacteria from the get-go. You should allow 50g of chlorine granules per 1000 gallons.
To dose water in a tank with 5 mg/L chlorine use: 40 millilitres of liquid pool chlorine or 170 millilitres of bleach, for every 1000 litres in the tank. Always test the residual chlorine level with a chlorine test strip.
Light Green or Teal Pool Water:
To double shock, you will need to add 2 pounds for every 10,000 gallons of water. For instance, if you pool is 20,000 gallons, you will add 4 pounds of shock.
Superchlorination, also known as shocking or chlorine shocking, is the process of adding several times more chlorine to the pool than is normally needed so that the chlorine can "burn" through resistant compounds, chemicals, oils and strong types of algae.
What is the corresponding weight in pounds per gallon? Chlorine gas has formed into a liquid state. It weighs 19.75 lbs/gal.
Chlorine pools should superchlorinate weekly to ensure proper sanitation of the water and prevent bacteria and algae growth. Superchlorination is recommended after heavy bather loads and/or heavy rain fall.
Let the pump run for at least eight hours after shocking, and wait for the chlorine level to fall below 5 ppm before anyone goes in the water.
Avoid swimming in the pool after Super Chlorination. High levels of chlorine are toxic and the water should be tested prior to re-entering the pool following a shock treatment. No one should enter the pool until the chlorine level has returned to or lower then 3ppm (Parts Per Million).
It Should Not Be Done Together
This is because when you mix chlorine and algaecide together, it renders both of them useless. Hence, you should first shock the pool and wait for the chlorine levels to fall below 5 PPM.
After Shocking Your Pool
It is safe to swim once your chlorine levels are around 5 ppm or after 24 hours. It is always best to test first!
How Often Should I Shock My Pool? Shocking your pool regularly will help to keep the water clean and free of contaminants. You should aim to shock your pool about once a week, with the additional shock after heavy use. Some tell-tale signs that your pool needs to be shocked are cloudy, foamy, green, or odourous water.
Pools can immediately turn green after shocking when they have metals like copper in the water. These metals oxidise when exposed to high levels of chlorine which makes the pool water turn green. Adding a metal control product such as Zodiac Metal Remover will help to restore the pool water.
Never close the cover immediately after shocking the pool. It is recommended to wait several hours before closing the cover. Use a test kit to regularly test the pool water. If the tests results are good, this does not imply the water chemistry was good prior to your current test results.
However, after shocking the pool, you shouldn't vacuum for at least 24 hours. Running the water pump during this period will allow the shock to do its job.
