Many locks are made of the same basic parts: pins (usually 12) and springs. The upper six pins are the same size, and the bottom six pins come in varying sizes to match up with the grooves on your particular key. The little springs serve to hold the pins in place.
The lockset inside a deadbolt lock consists of a rotating barrel and five spring-loaded pins that fit into the barrel to prevent it from turning. The key pushes these pins up and out of the barrel, and that's what you're going to do with the pick.
Aside from the number of cuts on the key, it's simple to determine if a key is a 5-pin or 6-pin key at a glance: A 6-pin key has a longer keystop on top. A 5-pin plug can be repinned to accomodate a 6-pin key. In Figure 11, notice that the 0-position on the key is not used.
Most Master Locks are very easy to pick and are considered one of the easiest beginner locks when practicing lock picking. They have 4 standard pins and a wide-open keyway that can be quickly bypassed in many ways including picking them with improvised tools such as paperclips, bobby pins, or even a chicken bone.
Most Night Latches (Yale Type Locks) are 5 pin but more and more common now, is 6 pin cylinders. This one extra pin makes a vast amount of difference to the security of the lock.
Answer. A five button lock has 1082 combinations, so claiming “thousands of combinations” is a stretch.
Any key that can open two or more locks is considered a master key. Many master keys use pin and tumbler locks. For a master key to work, though, there must be something called master wafers inside the lock. When the master wafers line up, the key and lock can turn freely.
Try bolt cutters.
This will not work on most master locks, as they are made of case hardened steel.
The easiest way to pick a Master Lock is by raking it. This is done by first tensioning the core and using a lock pick to bump all of the pins to the shear line. Master Locks can also be picked with a variety of makeshift tools including paperclips, bobby pins, soda cans, and even chicken bones.

This basically means the lock has at least 5 spring loaded pins which lift up and down depending on the shape of your key. With 5 or more it makes the lock difficult to pick and therefore more secure (see image).
Upper pins sit between springs and the pin tumblers. The spring and upper pins are fully extended and the pin tumblers are aligned inside the barrel of the lock. When a key is inserted into the lock they press against the pin tumblers forcing them into the upper chamber pins and compressing the springs.
Take the protective rubber nib off the tip of the bobby pin before straightening it out; this is how you make your lock pick. Then, take another bobby pin and bend the end of it at a 90° angle to make a tension wrench; this is the second thing you need in order to pick a deadbolt with a bobby pin.

It's quite easy to pick a deadbolt lock. In fact, you would want to replace all your key locks with electronic ones when you discover how simple it is. This doesn't mean that picking a deadbolt lock does not require skills or practice – it still does – but the technique is so easy that anybody can learn it.
You might be able to take apart a mechanical pencil and use some of the sturdier metal components to pick a lock, but a wooden pencil probably wouldn't work. However, you can use pencil lead to lubricate a sticky lock if you don't have powdered graphite on hand!
One of the most common (and easiest to pick) locks is the pin-and-tumbler, which is a type of cylinder lock. Cylinder locks are used in most deadbolts. When picking a pin-and-tumbler lock, put the tension wrench in the keyhole and turn it as if it was a key.
All that is required is that you get hold of a bolt cutter to cut the master lock. If you do not have a bolt cutter, you can get that or leave the task for professionals to do. Please note that cutting a master lock with a bolt cutter might not work on most master locks because they are made of case-hardened steel.
One of the easiest ways to break a padlock is with a hammer. Start by inserting 2 fingers into the padlock's shackle loop and pull up on the shackle to create tension. Then, tap the side of the lock that contains the fixed end of the shackle with a hammer using quick, short strikes.
Bump keys are specially cut keys that can bypass the security mechanisms built into traditional pin and tumbler locks. Bump keys are also referred to as “999 keys” because all of their ridges are cut to the maximum depth (999) in a key-making machine.
Is there a master key for all locks? For certain systems of locks, yes. A master key is specifically designed to unlock a given locking system. Having one key for safekeeping can help open a lock in case its paired key is lost or damaged.
A skeleton key has the warded section of the key removed so that it opens all the doors of a system.
