Owner-programmed code numbers can be from four (4) to eight (8) digits in length. Two different code numbers can be programmed into the SmartCode lock.

For example, if you want to program User Code 2, press the program button twice. Many Kwikset locks hold 4 User Codes, but some hold as many as 30 at once. The program button is a small black button in the battery compartment of the lock.
The default Programming Code is 0-0-0-0. It is recommended that you change it to a code of your own. The lock is pre-programmed with a default User Code of 1-2-3-4. It is recommended that you delete this code.
Key codes are found on the side or the bow of the original key that came with your new lock. Some brands do not stamp this code on the side of their keys. If this is the case the only way to get that code is with a key gauge.

Some Kwikset locks, and most other brands as well, are made with a six-pin cylinder so there are more key cut combinations, which make it more difficult to pick and less likely that any two peo- ple will have matching keys.
You can identity the type of Kwikset lock you have by locating a small vertical slot on the plug. This is located to the left of the cylinder's keyway.
You will hear 3 long beeps after the 5 seconds is completed indicating the lock has been reset. A User Code is used to unlock the door while a Mastercode is a password for making changes to the lock features. Interior of door You will reset your User Code to 1-2-3-4 and Mastercode to 0-0-0-0 when the reset is complete.
If it's only 1-5, then there are 3125 different combinations. If it's 0-9, then it's 10,000,000,000 different combinations.
In most cases the key number will be stamped on the front of the lock next to where the key enters, in some cases the number may also be stamped on the original key as well.
Make sure the User Code is correct and that the Kwikset button is pushed after entering the User Code. If the door still won't unlock, use a key to unlock the door. Call technical support for further troubleshooting.
Keyed alike options come in a variety of styles offered by different manufacturers. Keyed alike codes like: CAT65, C413A, or ES201, or just a numerical number all represent keyed alike codes. Specifying a keyed alike option will usually allow you to order more locks that use the same key at a later date.
Other videos criticizing Kwikset point out that the lock can be easily compromised using a specialized bypass tool used by locksmiths. This tool was developed specifically because the SmartKey lock is so tough to pick -- locksmiths needed another way to force the lock open for their locked-out customers.
Only SC1 5-Pin keys are compatible.
