Skim coats dry quickly. Any skim coat or the outer edges of feather coats will dry within 15 to 20 minutes. Properly installing drywall requires not just effort but also plenty of time, particularly when it comes to drying time for each coat of drywall mud. For a better paint job, avoid pushing drywall mud times.
Newly plaster skimmed walls take approximately 4 days to dry out before you should attempt to decorate them. It is crucial to wait until the plaster has dried, and its colour has changed to a pale pink. There should be no brown patches as a guide. In some instances, you may need to wait up to 4 weeks.
If your skim coat is real shallow, you can prime and paint the same day. However, if there are spots where it is thick because it was filling divots or doing some serious leveling, you will need to wait 24hrs for the J/C to dry.

Be prepared to apply at least two coats for a smooth finish. You don't need to wait for the first coat to dry before applying the second. As soon as you've finished covering a wall, go back to the beginning for your next coat, dragging your trowel.
However, we'd recommend leaving it for at least two weeks if possible to be safe. In the wrong conditions, plaster can even be known to take up to four weeks to dry! The colour of the plaster should help you tell whether or not your walls are ready to be painted.
If you still see indentations or imperfections after the second coat dries, trowel on a third coat. After the last coat dries, pole-sand the wall with 120-grit paper.
Reasons for priming before skim coats
When substrate was checked and accepted, all cracks and holes are filled inn, surface is clean and vacuumed it is time for priming with suitable product. Why priming is needed? To reduce water absorption of the substrate. To increase strength of the substrate.
There are quick drying joint compounds you might want to use. If you apply it and then use a hair dryer or crank up the heat in the house, that'll dry it out more quickly.
b) Disadvantages of Skim Coat:
A skim coating is a more workable and skilled process. That's why this process is more expensive than applying for textured walls and ceilings. It needs more time for painting because the skim coat drying process is slow.
Good air flow also helps speed things up. To dry mud quicker, pros use fans for better air circulation. Some also use heaters to warm up the room.
Without the mist coat you're likely to have very poor adhesion between your paint and your plaster and quite often it will crack, flake or even peel off in sheets in some instances!
There are two ways to do the second coat: Do exactly what you did on the first coat—simply repeat with the easier sanding all purpose compound. Cross-apply the compound.
Level 5 // As you might have guessed, Level 5 is the gold standard. It's as smooth as you can get, or the highest finish possible. There are no bumps, no texture, and it's achieved by multiple skim coat layers that are finished with a good sanding.
Generally, it takes a few hours to overnight for a skim coat layer to dry. Always follow the manufacturer's recommendations and allow each layer to dry completely before sanding and applying the next coat.
Skim coating over paint can be more challenging, as the adhesion between the joint compound and the existing paint may be less reliable. It's essential to prepare the surface properly and use a bonding primer to ensure a successful application.
MAKE SURE YOUR WALLS ARE COMPLETELY DRY. This can take a maximum of 7-10 days, depending on the conditions in your home.
Once the skim coat is applied, it should be left to dry thoroughly. After drying, you can sand the surface to remove minor imperfections and create an even smoother finish.
After smoothing, each skim coat should be 1-2mm, meaning a total thickness after two coats of approx 3mm. If your ceiling is very uneven you might have patches that are slightly thicker, apply a third coat rather than applying too thickly in these areas to prevent cracking.
How Long After Skimming Can You Paint Walls? You can usually paint three days after skimming your walls. That's because plaster typically takes at least three days to dry and cure.
Scrape down raised edges, mud those perimeter areas with a 6” knife, sand into existing until you can't see any lines once it's dry. Then you can try blending in the texture with a spray can, or buy a small touch up texture hopper and mix up your own mud(what I would do).
