A propeller with three blades achieves the best balance of smooth operation and minimal drag through the water, which is why a three-blade design is the most popular for general boating.
Ideally, you want a two blade prop - just as a long, thin wing is more efficient, a long propeller blade is more efficient. But at some point practicality comes into play.
Generally, a 4-blade propeller will provide better handling and grip at low speeds. In contrast, a 3-blade propeller will provide better top speed and efficiency. A 4-blade propeller has more surface area in the water, which provides increased grip and handling at lower speeds.
The more blades a propeller has, the less efficient it is. So much so that even if they're more a novelty than anything, there are single-bladed propellers (with a counterweight where the other blade will be) that are said to be the most efficient, but they're a pain to find and maintain.
In general, 2-blade propellers are slightly more efficient.
Five Blades
Placing the drive higher on the transom reduces drag and can increase speed, but it also places the propeller near the surface. The five-blade design of the Maximus allows it to maintain a solid bite on the water, even in the highly aerated water flow produced by performance boats with stepped hulls.
Large propeller designs can become less effective operating at the axial velocity. The most efficient designs are those which maintain a pitch to diameter ratio of 1:1.
Most outboard engines use three or four-blade propellers. Three blades are the most common, as they provide great all-around performance together with superior top-end speed.
Higher Top Speed
By stripping the extra blade, there's less drag on a 3-blade propeller. Less drag equates to a higher top speed since there's less slowing down the boat.
Typically when you add blades, you get rid of some of the pitch. The reason for this is that the addition of the extra blade causes increased drag, which, in turn, requires more horsepower to achieve the same rpm. Since the horsepower is limited, the RPMs drop and the speed will tend to drop with it.
Stainless Steel Propellers
Thinner blades make less drag through the water, which generally translates to higher top speed. The strength of stainless steel also means these props are less prone than an aluminum prop to damage from minor impacts or from running through sand or mud bottoms.
To find the right size, consider the engine's horsepower, the boat's hull type, and the type of boating you do. You should also match the propeller to the engine's recommended WOT (wide-open throttle) RPM range. Propellers that are too large or too small can cause inefficient performance or damage the engine.
When it comes to design and aesthetic look, the 3 bladed ceiling fan is more pleasing than the 5 bladed. However, the 5 blades can generate more wind because the blade to blades distance is nearer, thus the wind it produces is more consistent.

Compared to the traditional three blade wind turbine, a five-blade turbine can increase annual performance by more than 60%. The speed of the blades of a five-blade turbine is 60% of the three-blade wind turbine. Five-blade wind turbines greatly reduce the chance of high-speed malfunction.
Higher Performance and a Quieter Cabin
Cruise is 2 knots faster than the current four-blade prop, and a full 5 knots faster than the five-blade wood-based propeller option. The new Hartzell five-blade prop is also significantly quieter in the cabin and in the pattern.
Reducing the diameter of the propeller, not only lowers the level of noise produced, it also reduces compressibility losses, increasing the propeller efficiency. Without the addition of more blades, the older classic propellers would be aerodynamically overloaded resulting in partial stall and lower overall efficiency.
Three Blade
They have a major advantage when going against heavy winds and seas or a current as they will keep your boat speed by up to 30% better than the two blade. Moreover, they will run much smoother and reduce vibrations as it is balanced around 3 or 4 points as opposed to 2.
A 4 blade prop gives you more "traction" and will get you up to speed quicker. However, it won't go as fast on the top end.
The more blades you have, the less efficient the propeller at turning power into thrust. So for optimum efficiency, the best number of blades is one.
Lowering prop pitch will increase acceleration and thrust. Increasing prop pitch will make the boat go faster (provided the engine has enough power to keep the RPMs in the optimum operating range.
Is a 19 or 21-inch prop faster? In theory, a larger diameter at the same pitch and RPM will have the same speed, but greater thrust. So a 21-inch prop won't go faster than a 19-inch. However, the increased pitch will increase the top speeds.
As a rule, a stainless-steel prop of the same pitch and diameter will make your boat go faster — up to 2 to 3 knots, on some boats — than an aluminum prop. Stainless steel is stronger and can be made thinner, which allows more speed. Stainless steel also flexes less and keeps its shape at higher speeds.
Larger Diameter: Propellers with a larger diameter typically provide better acceleration (hole shot) because they can move more water at lower speeds. However, they may limit top speed due to increased drag.
