If your carpet is looking worn out, then so is the underlay. Old underlay will already be flatter and worn out, unable to cushion the everyday footfall throughout your home and protect the pile surface of the carpet.

When Can You Reuse Your Carpet Underlay? There are specific scenarios where reusing your underlay might be suitable: Age of the Underlay: If your underlay is relatively new (around 1-2 years old) and in excellent condition, reusing it can be an option. However, most underlays have a lifespan of around 10 years.
So generally speaking 7mm is about as thin as you want to go unless you have a specialist need for something thinner, but 8-12mm is the band most manufacturers produce carpet underlay with and its perfect for any room and any carpet.

Staple the Underlay
Once the underlay is down on the floor, it's time to staple the edges down - although we say edges, it's best practice to staple within the edges of the carpet grippers. If you are laying underlay on a concrete floor, it's a good idea to use a spray adhesive.
Synthetic underlayment is made of tough materials that effectively resist water and UV rays. Its textured surface provides improved traction for roofers, making it safer to work on sloped roofs, especially in wet or icy conditions. Estimated lifespan: 20 to 35 years.
Replacing the underlayment allows you to actively prevent any future problems in the underlayment, which could affect your new shingles. A tear-off gives you the opportunity to check the roof decking for mold, rot, or damage — which can affect the quality of your new roofing.

Impact on Flooring Warranty:
Many flooring manufacturers specifically advise against using more than one layer of underlay, as this can void the product's warranty. The extra cushioning places unnecessary stress on the locking mechanisms and joints of the floor, making it more likely to fail prematurely.
Mattress protectors, underlay, doonas and pillows should be washed every six months. It is important that they be dried properly afterwards.
But an underlay coming to the end of its lifecycle will feel uneven, lumpy and even uncomfortable to walk on. So, if you can feel the hard subfloor underneath your feet when walking across the room, it's probably time to replace your underlay.
White vinegar
Mix up a solution of 1 part vinegar to 1 part water in a spray bottle. Apply this spray to the mouldy area and leave it to work for an hour. You can then wipe the vinegar away using a damp cloth which should hopefully remove the mould.
Often, your carpet underlay will hold most of the water. This is the main area you want to dry. To make sure you get a thorough drying process, lift the carpet and inspect your underlay, if it is saturated, it may need to be replaced.
If you buy a more expensive carpet, for example wool, that is designed to be durable and last for many years, then you should try to invest in a higher quality underlay. Of course, that's if the budget allows.
Thick underlay may be the gold standard, but those measuring 10-11mm are a great compromise.
If your carpet is low-pile and is generally flat and in good condition, your laminate can be properly installed on top of the existing floors. It is important to remember that a high quality underlayment will still better serve your flooring than low-pile carpet overall.
Some carpet underlays re-used hessian bags that contained friable asbestos. The asbestos in the underlay may be friable. Glues and adhesives used on carpet underlay may have contained non-friable asbestos. Other types of carpet underlay, like rubber and foam, do not contain asbestos.
