Thistle Finishing Plaster should always be protected from continuous and repeated exposure to moisture as this may result in loss of strength and / or adhesion.

The minimum curing time for plastering varies by type: undercoat plaster needs 7–14 days, finishing plaster requires 3–7 days, and specialist plasters like lime can take 15–30 days to fully cure.
When your plastering is first completed it will be rich brown in colour because the plaster will be fresh and full of moisture. As the plaster dries out it will become patchy, a mixture of brown and pink. Once dry, the plaster will be pale pink in colour and all of the brown patches will have disappeared.
Thistle Universal OneCoat is also ideal for filling larger holes and chasing in. Simply build up the coverage in stages to a maximum of 25mm. Notes: Coverage is based on 13mm thickness.
Usually, when plaster takes too long to dry, it is due to a damp issue. Moisture gets trapped in the wall and does not allow the plaster to dry. You may need to call a specialist to take a look and assess the problem.
If a new layer is applied to plaster that is already fully dry, it will not bond. Once the plaster is finished, wait for at least a week before decorating.
Thistle One Coat Plaster is pre-mixed with aggregate and only clean water needs to be added to prepare it for use. Simply sprinkle plaster into clean cold water and then mix until thick and creamy. Mechanical mixing should be carried out with a high torque yet slow or variable speed type.
For gypsum plaster, we generally recommend waiting around 24 hours between coats. This period allows the plaster to harden and set properly, providing a sturdy base for the next layer.
If the temperature gets too high, the plaster can dry too quickly and crack – especially the areas around your radiators. Instead, keeping the temperature low, comfortable and consistent will help the plaster to dry evenly.

Gyprock Plaster Accelerator is a safe and easy way to speed up the setting times of gypsum-based plaster products such as Base Coat, Cornice Cement and other specialty plasters. Ideal for small jobs where time is an issue, a small amount of Gyprock Plaster Accelerator is mixed thoroughly to the dry or wet plaster mix.
One mist coat should suffice, but you can apply a second (or even third) coat just for extra peace of mind. That way, you can rest easy knowing that the plaster is sealed. Just make sure to wait 24 hours between applying each coat.

One of the easiest ways to speed up the setting time of plaster is to use warm water when mixing it. Gypsum plaster reacts more quickly when mixed with warm water because it accelerates the hydration process. Simply using water that is warmer than room temperature can shave several minutes off the setting time.
If you need to dry your plaster faster, there are a few things you can do. For instance, you could use a hairdryer on a low setting, but this should only be done in small areas.
You can apply tiles up to 20kg per m2 directly to Thistle finishing plasters, except where the system includes a bonding agent. As the total weight of tiles and plaster applied over a bonding agent is limited to 20kg per m2, consider tiling directly to the background instead.

How to speed up the drying process. The drying out of the new plaster is enhanced significantly by increasing ventilation to the area. Opening windows and doors, and the introduction of a dehumidifier, will remove moisture in the atmosphere. The introduction of heat must be considered with caution.
A minimum of seven days of curing is recommended for plastered surfaces. Grooves: After plastering the outer walls, cut grooves to prevent cracks caused by temperature differences. These grooves function as expansion joints in the wall.
Let the plaster dry
Your plaster will dry quicker with a heater or if you open a window. If you try to apply paint to wet plaster this can cause adhesion problems. Applying emulsion to wet plaster also means that it may not bond properly and you could find that it peels off your wall.
