Small 20g chlorine tablets will dissolve slowly over a period of 3-7 days depending on water flow, water temperature and hot tub usage.
In most cases, you're best off with 3-inch chlorine tablets, as one single tablet can treat up to 5,000 gallons of water. On the other hand, 1-inch tablets contain far less chlorine (about half as much as 3-inch tablets), so they're better suited for smaller indoor pools and spas.
Typically, a 3-inch pool chlorine tablet is designed to chlorinate from 7,500 to 10,000 gallons of water per week, meaning it'll take seven days to dissolve.

If the tablets are not dissolving, and you get a strong smell of chlorine when you open the chlorinator, you probably have a bad check valve in the chlorinator. How long does chlorine take to work? One potential drawback for using chlorine as a disinfectant is that it takes time to kill bacteria. In water supplies, if the water is at 18°C or above, the chlorine will need to be in contact with it for at least 30 minutes.
Properly stored chlorine tablets should last three to five years. The storage site should be cool, dry and well-ventilated, such as in a basement. Never leave chlorine tablets in the direct sun, even in a covered bucket, because the heat will accelerate the degrading process of the tablet and its ingredients.
Long-lasting winter algaecide is recommended to prevent algae growth over an extended period of time. A winter floater may be used to slowly disperse chlorine or non-chlorine sanitizer throughout the pool.
Undissolved Granules
The presence of these granules does not indicate that you have added too much stabilizer -- the product is slow to dissolve, particularly when static. You can speed the process by agitating the granules with a brush so that they circulate in the pool water.

BUT, if you have to shock your pool during the day in broad daylight, you can still swim after adding shock. It's recommended that you wait one hour after adding shock with the filter running, and then test the water to confirm the pH and chlorine are in the proper range before letting anyone enter the pool.
If you add chemicals to balance the water after testing, wait a full day – or even longer – before retesting. It takes about 24 hours for the chemicals to properly circulate in order to get an effective reading from the retest. The water test will assess the pH, chlorine, total alkalinity and calcium hardness.
