To use a CLR in a well-ventilated area, combine equal parts of warm water and CLR. You can apply CLR directly to your faucet or showerhead. Find an area to test the CLR before you apply it to an entire surface. Never leave CLR on an area for more than two minutes.
After 2 minutes rinse promptly with cold water. Never leave Calcium, Lime and Rust Remover on an area for longer than two minutes. If the stain does not disappear, repeat this process and add more Calcium, Lime and Rust Remover solution as necessary.
We recommend not leaving CLR on a surface for longer than two minutes. Always ensure that the CLR is rinsed off thoroughly after use.
Just fill a plastic cup or ziploc bag with CLR, hold that so the faucet is in it for 5 minutes or so, then hit it with a scrub brush. Repeat if necessary, but usually the first time is good enough unless your deposits are so bad the CLR can't penetrate all the way through.
You can also use a calcium, lime, rust (CLR) remover product. Let the aerator soak for an hour. Minerals should be sufficiently loose to take apart the aerator. Scrape out loose material with the end of a screwdriver.
We do not recommend that CLR products be used on any metals except for chrome or stainless steel. Any 'polished' finish usually has a coating and most nickel materials are combination metals (containing zinc) and CLR products could compromise the finish.
Soaking the aerator in vinegar will loosen some of the grime. You can soak it as long as you want, but even five minutes will help. The toothbrush makes it easy to scrub the inside. Don't use that toothbrush for brushing your teeth again.
DO not use CLR on natural stone or marble, terrazzo, colored grout, painted or metallic glazed surfaces, plastic laminates, Formica, aluminum, steam irons, leaded crystal, refinished tubs or any damaged or cracked surface. CLR may etch older sinks, tubs and tiles. CLR is corrosive.
It really depends on what kind of cleaning you need to do. If you're dealing with really tough, built-up mineral deposits, especially in your bathroom or kitchen, CLR might be the way to go. It's strong enough to handle stains that vinegar might struggle with.

It's pretty easy to use, too: spray CLR Bathroom and Kitchen directly onto the stains on your (dry) shower glass, let it sit for up to 2-3 minutes, wipe your shower glass clean with a damp cloth and rinse.
Soak Faucet Head
Submerge the faucet head in the bagged mixture and secure the bag with a rubber band. Soak for 30 to 60 minutes, then remove the bag.
When it comes to being good for the environment, CLR has a slight advantage. It's biodegradable and part of the EPA's Safer Choice Program, which recognizes products with safer ingredients. Lime Away works well, but it doesn't have the same environmental certifications.
Soak a rag or a cloth in vinegar or lemon juice and wrap it around your tap, ensuring all areas are covered. Secure the cloth with an elastic band and leave for an hour. Occasionally squeeze the cloth to release more of the acid onto the tap. Remove the cloth and wipe away the limescale.

That is the reason it adapts well to removing limestone stains too! Spray the product directly on the faucet, showerhead, or sink and then wipe it with a cloth or an old toothbrush. It tackles the most stubborn limescale deposits quickly.
The chemical reactions happen pretty quickly when you first apply CLR, so leaving it longer doesn't help. Basically, you won't get better results by leaving it overnight, and you might end up causing damage instead.
Is CLR Safe For PVC Pipes? CLR products are safe for all pvc products. It is also safe for copper plumbing and septic tanks. The materials to avoid using CLR on are painted surfaces, aluminum, etched glass, Formica, colored grout, natural stone, brass and copper.
Cure: You have to buy a new sink because the CLR is caustic and etched through the top layer of the brushed stainless steel surface. No amount of scrubbing can fix it, the damage is permanent.
*White vinegar is usually sufficient to remove the calcium buildup, but if you plan to use store-bought cleaners with these instructions, be sure to wear rubber gloves and avoid breathing the fumes as you clean.
If your aerator feels stuck and does not twist off easily, wrap it in an old rag for protection and use a pair of pliers or an adjustable wrench to twist it off. Separate the aerator's three parts- the metal casing, screen, and rubber washer, in preparation for soaking.
