To avoid or eliminate these problems, the designer can install an air chamber or a water hammer arrester. Another way to control water hammer is to use valves with controlled closing times or controlled closing characteristics.
The chambers can fail, though, because water under pressure gradually absorbs the air. If you never had hammering and then it suddenly starts, most likely your plumbing system's air chambers have become waterlogged.
Valves Can Reduce Water Hammer
Sometimes the sudden closure of swing check, tilting disc and double door check valves can cause hydraulic shock. You can prevent this by changing these valves with silent of non-slam check valves, such as the kind manufactured by DFT.
Water hammer is usually caused in high pressure (e.g. mains pressure) water systems either when a tap is turned off quickly, or by fast-acting solenoid valves, which suddenly stop the water moving through the pipes and sets up a shock wave through the water, causing the pipes to vibrate and 'shudder'.
The pressure reducing valve may be used for water hammer protection under properly defined conditions. The water hammer events are so fast that the relief of pressure by this means requires very special rapid response valves designed for the particular system.
Install air chambers
Air chambers are also an effective solution to water hammer. These systems consist of a short segment of pipe with an empty/air filled chamber that cushions shock waves. This reduces the size of the shock waves downstream of the valve.
Silent (piston) check valves.
This is probably the best known design to reduce waterhammer becuse its spring can strong enough to ensure the required closure speed and it has a short stroke length to ensure very fast and “slam-less” closure.
This can be fixed by draining your plumbing system, which requires turning off the main water valve and opening the highest faucet in your home. Then drain water from the lowest faucet. The chamber should fill up with air once the water is drained and resolve your water hammer problem.
Installing Pressure Regulating Devices
High water pressure is a frequent reason for water hammering. Your problem is probably caused by your pressure, which is close to 100 psi. 30 to 55 psi is considered normal pressure. Consider hiring a plumber to install a water pressure regulating device to address this issue.
A faulty toilet fill valve that doesn't close completely or a quick-closing fill valve are both possible causes of water hammer that occurs after you flush a toilet.
If a single appliance seems to be causing your water hammer, you can install a water hammer arrestor. Arrestors will absorb the water jolt that comes from water valves closing suddenly which should stop the hammer noise from bothering you.
The extreme pressure can instantly blow out gaskets and explode pipes causing immediate danger to any person near the burst. Eliminating or reducing water hammer starts with proper training. Ensure that operators know the importance of opening and closing shut-off valves slowly.
The density of fluid.
The fluid property which affects the water hammer is density.
If you're hearing banging noises at random, even while no water is running, it's likely that there's some sediment buildup at the bottom of your water heater. If this is the case, what you're hearing is the resulting reverberations of steam bubbles coming out of that built-up sediment.
Left untreated, water hammer can lead to actual damage to pipework, appliances and components of any system. Over time this damage can accumulate and result in the premature failure of parts of the plumbing system and all the watery hassle that can cause.
Appliances such as the washing machine, dishwasher or ice maker can be another cause of water hammer around your home. This is because they can cause pressure fluctuations that lead to said water hammers. If the hammer only occurs when one of these appliances is running or is turned off, then you have your culprit.
Water arrestors by their design are an addition to the pipe. A little air chamber that extends perpendicular off each that is sealed off from water. When the water moves suddenly in the pipe that air chamber absorbs the shock. As they get used though, over time they wear out making them ineffective.
Hammering can be caused by waterlogged air chambers, clogged chambers, or excess pressure in your plumbing system. It can also be the result of a valve or pipe clog, which can produce a staccato banging sound.

Exactly where to place the hammer arrestor will depend on the actual piping arrangement. The best places are either close to the pump, isolation or check valve that is originating the hammer, or at more distant points where the pipe changes direction, for example at the top of a pump riser.
