Pressing the “Test/Silence” button on the front of the unit should stop it from beeping or chirping. If this doesn't work, grasp the device and turn it counterclockwise. It should detach from the base so you can open the battery compartment in the back. Remove and replace the battery to see if it caused the issue.
A Checklist for Stopping the Chirping
First, replace the old battery. If you've installed a new battery and the alarm continues to beep, drain any residual charge from the unit. Remove the unit from the ceiling and remove its battery, then hold the test button for 15 seconds. Next, replace the battery.
Reset the Smoke Detector: Sometimes, a smoke detector just needs a good reset to stop the chirping. You can do this by turning off the power at the circuit breaker, removing the detector from the mounting bracket and disconnecting the power supply. Then, press and hold the test button for about 15 seconds.
Press the hush/silencing button. It will silence the entire interconnected system. The button may also say “test.” It should silence all the alarms immediately unless there's still smoke and debris. It will reset in eight minutes, given that the smoke and debris have dissipated.
How Long Does A Smoke Alarm Chirp Before It Stops Working? If you have a battery-powered smoke alarm, it will chirp for about a month before the battery dies. But if it's a hard-wired alarm with both AC power and a backup battery, it will keep chirping until you replace the backup battery.
Press the silence or reset button: Most alarms come equipped with a “silence” or “reset” button. Locate this button — often on the front or side of the device — and press it firmly. This action usually stops the beeping temporarily while you address the cause, such as replacing a battery or cleaning the unit.
All First Alert Alarms come with a Test Button. With the battery removed from the unit, press and hold this button for 30 seconds. This will fully reset the alarm, removing the residual charge of the previous battery.
Hush Mode: A Temporary Measure
While the chirps may be annoying, they're far less bothersome than having to wave a towel in front of the smoke alarm to get it to turn off every few minutes or just suffering with the loud blaring sound. In most cases, you can find the 'hush' button on the smoke detector's cover.
When your fire alarm gives an emergency warning chirp, this means it has detected smoke in your home. This means you need to evacuate your home immediately and gather at your designated meeting spot according to your family's emergency escape plan.
First, try the reset button on each smoke alarm. If that doesn't work, flip the circuit breaker off and on. If that fails, you may have to disconnect the smoke alarms and remove the backup batteries inside them one by one. (The batteries are there to protect you during a power outage.)
Silencing an alarm is not the same as resetting it. Silencing stops the audible and visual alerts but keeps the system in an “alarm” state. Resetting returns the system to normal operation. Always ensure you understand which action you're taking and why.

Often combined or paired with carbon monoxide detectors, smoke detectors emit light or sound to notify the people within the building of a fire. Generally, smoke detectors alone don't contact the fire department or other emergency services.
Several common causes can explain why your hard-wired smoke detector is beeping: Low battery: Even hard-wired smoke alarms have backup batteries that need replacing periodically. A low battery can cause that annoying beeping sound. Dust buildup: Dust and debris inside the smoke detector can trigger false alarms.
