Long curtains placed on the sides of the window will soften the edges of the shutters and add additional design interest. Shutters can be installed on just the bottom half of the window for light and privacy control, while a valance can be placed above to add unique style with a colorful fabric or simple pattern.
Brush away any dust or dirt and place the drop of lubricant or oil at the top of the hinge just under the head of the hinge pin. Then open and close the shutters several times so the lubricant works its way in. This will ensure that your shutters always swing smoothly.
Draperies and Cellular Shades
Layering draperies on top can help lend a more traditional feel and soften the look of your room. When choosing fabrics, pick your draperies first and use a matching solid color or neutral for the shades.
Can you spray paint wood shutters? If spray paint is all you have, you can use it to paint wood shutters, but the finish will not be as even or as durable as a dedicated exterior paint. Most spray paint is not made for exterior use. Sunlight and weather will quickly degrade the finish.
Plantation shutters are easy to clean and do not require heavy maintenance. On a regular basis, remove dirt and dust with a vacuum. If your shutters are extra dirty, wipe them down with white vinegar to keep them clean.
When just dusting won't cut it, mix a solution of 1 teaspoon dish soap and 1 gallon of hot water. Use a clean soft cloth dipped in the solution and wrung out nearly dry to wipe down the shutters while in the closed position, first on one side and then the other. Rinse the cloth each time it gets grimy.
There are basically two ways to keep your shutter panels closed: by using magnets or by using panel locks or catches. Magnets: Magnets can be used to keep your shutter panels closed. Magnets will be attached to the sill or frame at the top and bottom.
PVC shutters usually comes with 10 years structure warranty, as its very stable material – barely no reaction with heat and mositure, even through paint does fade off eventually but the whole shutters – every parts will fade off other than one or two piece, so unlikely you will see difference.
Pushing the pin in, align the slat to the hole and let it find the hole. Next, you need to attach the slat to the push rod. Take the shorter staple and insert it through the staple on the push rod. Dab a small amount of superglue on the end and insert it into the holes on the slat.
For shutters made of wood, exterior latex paint works best. If you have vinyl shutters, select a high quality, exterior acrylic paint or a product specifically formulated for plastics.
If you have wood shutters, you need to remove the old finish before adding new paint. There are a couple of ways to do this: by sanding or by using a chemical paint stripper. Use a paint scraper to remove flaking or chipping paint and then sand the surface lightly with a fine-grit sandpaper or a sanding sponge.
You will want to be sure to use the right kind of paint so that your shutters don't peel. I recommend using a high quality, 100% acrylic latex exterior paint in a satin finish. Using a primer, or a paint that is a primer and paint in one, will give better adhesion and help the paint last longer.
