Applying a coat of clear wax over Chalk Paint® will deepen the colour of the paint and create a beautiful, matt finish. It will protect against fingermarks and stains. It's also water-repellent, so you can wipe any marks away with a damp cloth.
Remove all chalk residue by one of these methods: Excessive chalking requires pressure-washing or sand-blasting. If a pressure washer is not available, scrub the surface with a stiff brush and a mild detergent. Rinse thoroughly with a strong stream of water from a garden hose.
A top coat is a sealant, it will seal and protect your chalk paint from being ruined by moisture or sticky fingers or even weather. Aside from protection, a top coat will further enhance the color of your chalk painted furniture. This is especially desirable for bright pieces or pieces with a lot of contrast.
Allow each coat of chalk paint to dry completely before applying the next. Rushing the process can trap moisture, leading to poor adhesion and peeling.
Apply Chalk Paint® Wax using a brush or lint-free cloth. Work in sections, moving your brush in all directions and making sure every bit of paintwork has been waxed. Remove any excess wax with a lint-free cloth as you go. Leave to dry.
Sealing Chalk Paint™ with Wax or Lacquer will not only protect your finish, but help the colour last longer. It means you can use your item without worrying about leaving behind marks or taking the paint off when you clean it.
Most chalk paint brands say you can choose to leave it unsealed too, but I don't recommend it. Chalk paint is very porous and will pick up stains and look a mess in no time if you don't seal it with something.
After painting, apply two or three coats of wax, allowing each coat to dry completely before applying the next, to get the extra durability you need.
Chalking is a loose, white powdery pigment residue on the surface of a coating accompanied by a loss of sheen and color. This can be expected to occur over time and is a normal way for paint film to wear. In some cases, this is a self-cleaning feature designed into the coating.
An easy way to restore/ fix this is to cut and buff with a cutting compound. Any brand will do, im using a generic brand available form my lcal automotive parts store SuperCheap Auto. This can costs under $20. A final polish and/or wax is also recommended to prevent any future chalky paint residue.
Remove paint chalking by washing or power-washing the surface with an appropriate cleaner. If some chalk remains after first washing, then wash again for complete removal; scrubbing may be necessary. Rinse well with water. Allow to dry thoroughly.
SURFACO ® Select Chalk-Binding Primer offers excellent adhesion on previously painted chalky surfaces in addition to alkali and efflorescence resistance on interior and exterior masonry surfaces. It is ideally suited for use on commercial and residential repaint projects.
Why does it occur? Chalking occurs due to ultra violet (UV) radiation from sunlight interacting with the constituents within the paint film. Over time UV degradation of the binder or resin within the paint film will allow the exposed pigment particles to become more loosely bound to the surface.
Seal chalk paint with clear varnish
varnishes dry quickly and can be painted over without any problems. We recommend using varnishes, especially for surfaces that are subject to really heavy use, as they create a much more robust surface than waxes, for example.
If you're short on time, here's a quick overview: Composition: Polycrylic is water-based, while polyurethane can be oil-based or water-based. Application: Polycrylic applies in thin coats and dries quickly; polyurethane takes longer to dry.
Before waxing or applying another top coat to your chalk paint, let the paint fully cure. You'll want to wait at least 24 hours before applying the wax or top coat. If you don't wait for the paint to cure before applying a top coat, you risk pulling up the paint.
CHALK PAINT CONS:
Chalk paint is thick and leaves brush marks. (Latex paint will also leave brush marks, but last time I used a spray gun for the latex paint.) You can't have custom colors mixed with Annie Sloan paint, though you are encouraged to mix them yourself.
To use vinegar to remove chalk paint, you should mix equal parts vinegar and water together in a spray bottle. White vinegar works best because it has the highest acidity, but cider vinegar works well, also. Spray this mixture all over the paint you want to remove, and then let it sit for at least 15 to 20 minutes.
This workable fixative from Krylon is a must for protecting pencil, pastel, chalk, charcoal, conte crayon and india ink drawings. The spray is acid free and archival safe and protects items from smudging, yellowing and wrinkling, yet you can erase through the coating to rework artwork if needed.
I've read several posts about it and have seen some beautiful results. This is what I did…. I rubbed a little Vaseline on the cedar chest in strategic areas after my second coat of pink Chalk Paint was dry (yes,I applied two coats of Chalk Paint to give a really good rich colour).
