For length and width, measure from one outer sink lip to the opposite side (for most sinks), or from the edge of the counter to the other edge lengthwise (for undermount). For round and oval sinks, measure the diameter, or the length across the widest point of the sink.
Measure from front edge to back of your existing top, or add one inch to the depth measurement of your top-less cabinet. A common bathroom vanity size is 21D inches, which would mean a 22D-inch top.
For a single vanity, the most popular widths are 24", 30", 36", 48", and for double vanities the most popular widths are 60" and 72", but start at 48". The standard depth of a vanity is typically around 20", but narrower options are available. The standard vanity height is 32", but ranges from 30" – 36".

A standard bathroom cabinet overhang is about 1 to 1 1/2-inches. This slight overhang is attractive and helps protect the cabinets below the counters from spills. However, some homeowners desire a larger or smaller overhang due to the benefits each can offer.
If the top is on a free standing vanity (no walls on either side) the top should be 2” LONGER (B) than the vanity to allow for 1” overhang on each side.
If your countertop is exposed, you have an under-mount sink. Use inside measurements to find a sink with similar measurements. Ensure you place your measuring tape at the top of the sink and measure the length (side to side), width (front to back), and depth (from the middle of the basin to the top of the sink).
The standard sink size is about 22 inches long to 30 inches wide, but once again it's crucial to take proper measurements. If you're replacing a drop-in sink with rims, start measuring from the outer lip of the sink, not the basin itself. If you have an undermount sink, start measuring where the edge meets the counter.
Vanity sizing is defined as the practice of labeling clothing with a size smaller than the actual cut of the items. In other words, your size 34 might actually be a size 36, or larger. This is done to make the customer feel better about themselves and to make them buy more clothing.

A garment marked as a size 12, for example, would now fit like a size 10 (in other words, vanity sizing).
Since countertops sit directly on the cabinets, the cabinetry must be installed prior to the final measurements, fabrication, and installation. If an apron or farmhouse sink is being used, it must be installed prior to template process.
OVERHANG - The countertop extends over the edge of the sink on all sides by approximately 1/8" - 1/4". Use caution with this installation to be sure that accessories such as colanders or cutting boards will fit properly. REVEAL - The countertop edge sits approximately 1/8" - 1/4" back from the edgeof the sink rim.
Clearance in front of the vanity: 21" minimum, although 30" is recommended for a total of 51" from the wall.
Clear floor space
NKBA designers recommend a 30″ clearance between the front edge of a fixture, such as a vanity or toilet, and any other fixture or wall. The building code allows for a minimum of 21″.
1. Purpose. If the counter is to be used for food prep, the standard measurement for the overhang is 1-1/2 inches. This is long enough to provide some protection for your cabinets without forming an obstruction.
Water control: If water collects on the surface of your countertop, it's important that the surface is as level as possible so the water can pool in place instead of spreading across the surface. That water can drip onto the floor and make the surface unexpectedly slippery.
Most round bathroom sink bowls are 16 to 20 inches in diameter, while most rectangular sinks are 19 to 24 inches wide and 16 to 23 inches front to back. The typical basin depth is 5 to 8 inches.

If you're building in your bath, you've got more flexibility with the depth of tiling around the edge. Make sure your door swings clear of your vanity and that you allow at least 100mm–200mm between a shower screen and vanity for cleaning.
