Varnish is great option to treat untreated wood for outdoor use because it's relatively cheap and provides superior protection for your wood. It can also last longer than some other sealants, which is something we all want.

Massaging a generous layer of oil into the surface of your wood furniture enhances its waterproofing abilities. Wood oil can only be applied to wood furniture that has not already been sealed. It can yellow over time so it is best used for darker wood grains.

Wood is untreated. The wooded area is sitting in water. Water and/or air space is hot & humid.
Boric acid (borate) is one of the most effective fungicides for use in treating wood rot. It can be applied to wood during construction to prevent future rot, or as a treatment to stop an active decay fungus from growing.
All unfinished wood or bare wood surfaces should always be primed prior to painting. This goes for both interior and exterior paint projects. Some find painting rotten wood a quick and easy fix. However, it only hides the rot and makes the wood visually appealing. To make wood waterproof naturally, use either polymerized linseed oil or tung oil, which are the two best natural wood waterproofing products. Refined hemp oil and walnut oil can also be used, but you will have to apply a repeat coat more quickly.
What's the Different Between a Sealer and a Waterproofer? Sealers and waterproofers perform similar functions, but they differ slightly in how they work. A wood or concrete sealer will protect the surface. Waterproofers are more durable than sealants because they penetrate the surface, filling in leaks or gaps.
