To clean a smelly dishwasher drain hose, flush out built-up grease and food particles. First, run a cycle with white vinegar to break down residue. For a deeper clean, disconnect the hose and physically clear it using hot water and a long, flexible brush or a straightened wire hanger.
Check the Dishwasher Drain Hose
Over time, grease and food particles can clog the hose, trapping dirty water inside. Quick Fix: Pour boiling water down the drain to break up grease. Use a pipe cleaner or a straightened-out wire hanger to remove the buildup inside the hose.
If your machine is still slow to drain, pour vinegar and baking soda into the basket at the bottom of the dishwasher. After 15 minutes, flush with hot water.
A rotten egg (sulfur) smell in your dishwasher is usually caused by decomposing food particles (especially from eggs or dairy) trapped in the filter, standing wastewater in the drain hose, or a clogged garbage disposal.
A washing machine drain that smells like rotten eggs is typically caused by a dry P-trap allowing sewer gas to escape, bacterial buildup from soap scum and lint in the drain hose, or a clogged drain filter.
You can also deodorize drains and help smelly drains with a combination of baking soda and vinegar. These ingredients, when used together, can also sometimes help to clear drain clogs.
The characteristic "old age smell" is scientifically known as nonenal (or 2-nonenal). It is a chemical compound produced when the skin's natural oils and fatty acids break down and oxidize as we age.
A dishwasher that smells like sewage could indicate an issue with the drain hose. If the hose is clogged, not installed properly, or bent, it can prevent proper drainage and allow sewer gases to back up into the dishwasher. A dirty dishwasher filter can also contribute to sewer-like smells.
To remove the rotten egg odor without chlorine, several options work well. Activated carbon filters remove hydrogen sulfide gas and improve taste and smell. Manganese greensand filters convert hydrogen sulfide into insoluble sulfur, which is filtered out.
The vinegar and added baking soda cycles can pay dividends in removing remaining residue left in the dishwasher by food waste. Baking soda's property as a deodorizer may also be beneficial if your dishwasher has been giving off an unwelcome musty stench.
Baking soda and vinegar do not effectively unclog drains. Instead of clearing debris, mixing them chemically neutralizes both ingredients into salt water. The fizzing reaction is visually satisfying but largely escapes upwards, offering zero power to dissolve grease, hair, or stubborn sludge.
Stainless steel resists corrosion, and vinegar is mild enough to break down dirt and grease without causing great harm, but damage is possible. Vinegar's acidity can corrode metal, especially if it mixes with salt. Vinegar can also dry out rubber, causing your dishwasher's rubber gaskets to shrivel, crack, and leak.
Clean your dishwasher drain hose using a natural enzymatic cleaner or a mix of 12one-half12 cup baking soda and 12one-half12 cup white vinegar. Pour the mixture down the drain, let it sit for 15 minutes to break down grease, and flush it with boiling water. For stubborn physical clogs, disconnect the hose and use a flexible drain brush.
Check the Drainage System
Dirt or debris in your hose can cause bad odors to occur. Make sure the hose is connected properly and not kinked or bent. If that doesn't help, we recommend calling a professional to take a look and they can make a recommendation to resolve the issue.
Pour 2 cups of white vinegar in a dishwasher-safe bowl and place the bowl on the bottom rack of your empty dishwasher. Select a dishwasher cycle with an air-dry or energy-saving dry option and press start. During the cycle, the vinegar will mix with the wash water to help neutralize odors and clean your dishwasher.
You'll want to replace your dishwasher hose if you notice leaks, cracks, or corrosion. It's also a good idea to replace the hose once it reaches 5–10 years old to prevent failure.
What you can do: Try this: put a couple teaspoons of baking soda in the drain and then pour in some vinegar. Then chase it with a pot of boiling water. The foaming of the baking soda/vinegar eats away at the junk in the drain and the boiling water helps wash it all away and sanitizes the drain.
Some of the hardest and worst smells to get rid of are pet odours, mold, and cigarette smells.
Hydrogen sulfide has a characteristic rotten egg smell which can be detected at very low levels, well below those that are known to cause health effects. Smelling hydrogen sulfide does not mean that it will harm your health. The smell can cause worry, anxiety and resentment.
Drano can work well if your drain smells bad due to minor clogs. If food, grease, or soap buildup is causing slow drainage and mild odors, it may clear things up. However, if the issue is sewer-related or due to bacteria, it won't be much help.
A mixture of equal parts baking soda and vinegar may unclog dishwasher drains. Pour the solution into the basket at the bottom and let it sit for 15 minutes. Then, pour hot water down the basket and run the rinse cycle. However, the baking soda and vinegar mixture may not be strong enough for tough clogs.
When a dishwasher smells like rotten eggs, it is almost always caused by food particles and grease trapped in warm, wet areas. Bacteria break down this waste and release hydrogen sulfide (sulfur) gas. Stagnant water and backed-up sewer gases from your kitchen sink can also cause the odor.
"Old person smell" can begin as early as age 40, as the body produces more of the compound 2-nonenal. This, often described as a grassy, greasy, or musty odor, is a natural part of aging caused by the breakdown of unsaturated fatty acids and declining skin antioxidant defenses. While it starts around 40, it becomes more noticeable in the 50s and beyond.
Smelling yourself through your pants even after showering is surprisingly common and usually caused by trapped sweat, bacteria, or a shift in pH rather than poor hygiene. The groin has dense sweat glands, and moisture trapped by synthetic fabrics or tight clothing causes bacteria to break down the sweat, amplifying the scent.
To get rid of "old person smell," you need to use soaps specifically formulated with Japanese persimmon extract and green tea. Standard body soaps, scrubs, and perfumes are typically ineffective against this odor.
