Paint a little bit of chalk paint on the flat surface of your laminate (so it's super easy to remove if it doesn't stick). Let it dry for 24 hours and then try to scratch it off with your fingernail. If it sticks really well, then you're good to paint the rest of your laminate furniture with chalk paint.

When painting laminate with Chalk/Mineral Paint (brand name or HMCP), the steps are EXACTLY the same as Method #1 EXCEPT NO PRIMER is needed. With Chalky Paints sanding is usually not required, but to get a long-lasting finish on the laminate, a light sanding is still a REALLY good idea!

You can sand, prime and paint laminate as if it were a solid wood piece of furniture! It's easy to skip the sanding step, because sanding is a drag… but it's especially important with laminate. Because it's often somewhat glossy-looking, and important to sand it down until the finish is very dull before priming.

If your chalk paint isn't sticking - and your furniture looks like it is repelling the paint - take these steps! Step 1: Wipe off any wet paint in the areas where it isn't sticking. Don't let it dry and then try to add more. If you can intervene and wipe off as much of the wet paint as possible, that's the best!
INSL-X STIX Waterborne Bonding Primer is one of the best primers for laminate furniture. This primer is made specifically to bond to surfaces that are hard to coat, and will give you a smooth, level finish.
Can you paint over Ikea furniture without sanding? On laminate furniture, yes you can! But remember, when I say no sanding – it means you don't have to use a lot of strength or an electric sander to get the “finish” completely off. We do need very light scuffing on the entire piece to roughen up the surface.

Do use a powerful bonding primer like INSL-X® STIX®, which offers powerful adhesion properties to any surface, even shiny ones like laminate. Do use sandpaper that is finer than 220-grit. Do sand the shiny surface down to a dull finish before applying paint. Don't try to stain it.

Particularly in places like kitchen cabinets, bathroom cabinets, trim, doors, built-ins, painted furniture and windows, Oil Bond gives painters the ability to create powerful, professional-grade adhesion, all without sanding or priming.
For furniture, it's best to use a satin or semigloss finish in either a latex or an oil-based paint. Never leave primer unpainted. If you choose a latex paint, a latex primer is an excellent choice for most uses. It goes on easily and blocks most stains, and it doesn't have the odor of an oil-based primer.
