Programmable Honeywell Thermostats
A common trick is pressing and holding the “Menu” and “+” buttons at the same time. Some require you to hold “Fan” and “Up” together. After a few seconds, the screen should flash and restart, wiping old settings.
Power Cycling Reset
Here's how to do it: Turn off the power supply to your thermostat from the circuit breaker or remove the device from its wall plate. Wait a few minutes to allow any residual charge to drain from the thermostat. Turn the power back on by reconnecting the thermostat or switching the circuit breaker.
Locating the Reset Button
To find it, you should first turn off your HVAC system to ensure safety. Remove the thermostat cover by either snapping it off or unscrewing it, depending on the model. Most modern thermostats will have a clearly marked reset button inside the panel.
If your thermostat lacks a menu or reset button, you can usually reset it by turning off the power to your HVAC system at the circuit breaker for about 30 seconds to 1 minute. This power cycle acts as a soft reset. Some models also allow you to remove the batteries for a few minutes to reset internal settings.
Signs That You Should Reset Your Thermostat
Resetting your Honeywell Thermostat can fix common issues like inaccurate temperature readings, scheduling problems, and unresponsive buttons. There are specific reset methods depending on your thermostat model (Wi-Fi, non-programmable, 5-1-1 day, etc.)
Most Honeywell thermostats work well for about 10 to 20 years depending on the type, how often they are used and how well they are cared for. The older mechanical thermostats typically don't last as long as digital or smart ones. Thermostats too don't stop working all at one time.
If there is no reset button or if that process did not work, shut off power to the thermostat, and make sure it's turned off. Find your circuit breaker that's connected to the thermostat and flip it. Wait for 30 seconds, and then flip it back on.
Locate the breaker for your HVAC system, then flip it to the 'off' position. Wait 30 seconds, then flip the breaker back to the 'on' position. Return to your thermostat, setting the mode to heat/cool and adjusting temperature settings, observing what happens with air coming from the vent.
A bad thermostat can be detected when your AC or furnace is not turning on, your HVAC systems are not turning off, the thermostat not responding, your HVAC system is short-cycling, the room temperature not matching the temperature displayed on the thermostat, and the programmed setting resetting themselves.
Sometimes, resetting your thermostat isn't enough to get it working again. A professional may be able to fix it, but you might need a replacement. Call for an evaluation if: Your display remains blank after resetting or doesn't turn on at all.
Dead Batteries or Power Issues
If your thermostat is battery-powered, weak or dead batteries may prevent it from sending the signal to turn on the furnace. Replace the batteries with fresh ones to rule this out. For wired thermostats, check your home's electrical panel for tripped breakers or blown fuses.
You can quickly reset it by removing the batteries and intentionally reinstalling them in the wrong direction for about a minute. Once you reinstall them correctly, the thermostat will be reset. Remember to follow all safety precautions when dealing with electrical devices.
Note: This is typically the same breaker as your indoor furnace or air handler, not the outdoor AC unit breaker. Flip the switch to the OFF position for 20-30 seconds. Return the switch to the ON position. The reboot process will take several minutes to complete.
