Softening Rough Silk After Washing
Gently run an iron over it on the "silk" setting while still slightly damp to soften it up. When it comes to detergents, less is more. Too much or the wrong detergent can make silk rough. Be sure to use a non-alkaline detergent.
DO immerse the silk in cold water tonight (or as soon after painting as possible) and hang to dry, then iron after at least 48 hours, as shown above. After that, if you desire to soften it more, just put some liquid fabric softener and cold water in a bowl or sink, add your silk and swish a few times.
You used hot water or a high-heat setting
When exposed to high temperatures, the fibers can become stiff and lose their natural lustrous sheen. This can cause the silk to feel hard and not smooth. To prevent this from happening, it is best to wash silk in cold or lukewarm water and use a low heat setting when drying.
Some silk items may lose color or get damaged in the machine. Don't wash silk and delicate fabric with heavy pieces of clothing like jeans. Using a delicates wash bag will protect your silks from any abrasive damage.
Silk also weakens when wet and can degrade in heat but this doesn't mean it is not washable. It just means that you need to wash it a certain (easy!) way to keep your silk garment as fresh as new for much longer. Better to be safe than sorry!
Never wring out your silk items or toss them in the dryer, says Whitehurst. To remove excess water, place the wet garment on a white cotton towel. Fold the towel over and gently blot. Then, using a padded hanger, hang the blouse or dress over the bathtub to drip dry.
A mesh bag will protect your silk from any possible snagging in the machine. Avoid the fabric conditioner/softener! It is not necessary for silk.
Some detergents are simply too harsh for silk and will leave it feeling rough and scratchy. Choose a gentle detergent specified for washing delicate fabrics, which will clean well while protecting the fibers.
Does silk wrinkle after washing? If you lay your silk flat to dry or hang dry your silk properly, you will see very few if any wrinkles on your garment. If you hold, roll, or incorrectly hang your silk, then you may see some wrinkles after washing.
The tumble action in the dryer will cause damage to the silk fibers, and the high levels of heat could possibly lead to shrinkage as well. Polyester satin can sometimes be placed into the dryer, depending on if the item's care label allows for it.

Rinse with cold running water. You may want to soften the shirt by soaking it in water and white vinegar (1/2 glass per 2 litres/67.6Oz of cold water) for 10 minutes and rinse it with cold running water.
Wash silk after every few wearings unless it needs freshening and stain removal. Remember that washing your silk clothes at home may put the garments at risk of color fading if cleaned too often. Dry cleaning usually doesn't fade the color of silk clothing as fast as home washing.
Silk is a delicate fabric, and you'll want to make sure it stays beautiful even after you've cleaned it. Washing it at too high a heat can cause it to shrink and damage it. It may be worth getting your silk garment professionally dry cleaned to avoid damage if it's particularly precious to you.
While it is entirely possible to machine wash silk, it isn't recommended. Being such a delicate fabric, silk doesn't tend to get along well with the constant turning motion of the machine drum. Silk should be handled with care, and throwing it in a washing machine can often be a little too rough.
Silk clothing can be damaged in a number of ways, but one of the most common causes of damage to this expensive fabric is mishandling it while cleaning. This is particularly true when attempting to remove difficult stains. Because of its vulnerability to strong chemicals, bleach should never be used on silk fabric.
Real silk is completely smooth to the touch, with a soft and almost waxy feeling. Further to that, if you scrunch it up a bit in your hand, you should hear a crunching noise – that sound should tell you that it's the real deal.
Similarly, silk can be handwashed, but doing so may change the lustre and drape of the fabric. If you have a silk garment made from particularly delicate silk, like chiffon or georgette, it's best to take it to a dry-cleaner as these fabrics are more likely to be affected by water.

Myth: Silk Blouses are Dry Clean Only.
Truth: As long as the label doesn't specifically say “dry clean only,” hand washing is safe for silks. The right way: Fill a clean sink with lukewarm or cold water and a small amount of delicates-friendly liquid detergent, like Tide Free & Gentle Liquid.
Silk is one of the strongest natural fibers, but it loses up to 20% of its strength when wet. It has a good moisture regain of 11%. Its elasticity is moderate to poor: if elongated even a small amount, it remains stretched. It can be weakened if exposed to too much sunlight.
Don't put silk items in the dryer. Heat can damage delicate silk fibers. If the dryer is absolutely necessary to use only 'air' setting for 15 minutes or less with NO fabric sheets or dryer balls. Remove sheets before completely dry.
