It's a common misconception that rain has a direct impact on the amount of water in residential wells. Over 95% of rainfall doesn't go directly into your well or even stay on your property; it runs off into creeks, streams, and rivers, some of which become part of the area's surface water supplies, or “reservoirs”.
Sending rainwater directly into the bore of a well is generally not recommended for several reasons: Contamination Risk: Rainwater can carry pollutants, debris, and pathogens that may contaminate the groundwater. Introducing untreated rainwater into a well can compromise water quality.
Water from heavy rains can reach shallow groundwater basins in a matter of days, but in places where wells must pump from deep underground aquifers — like those in the San Joaquin Valley — this can take months.
With a return to periodic precipitation, shallow wells predictably return to prior water level conditions within a few weeks or months. Deeper wells are less susceptible to impacts from drought, but if they are affected, anticipate recovery to take longer.
During the hydrologic cycle, replenishment occurs naturally when rain, stormwater and the flow from rivers, streams and creeks seeps into an aquifer. Water also gets into the ground as farmers irrigate fields and orchards.
With less rain, or changes in aquifer structure, the well becomes non-water bearing – i.e. dry. Your well may not 'fill up' when it rains, but it does reap the indirect benefits.
During heavy rainfall, your well can be submerged by flooding, putting your well water at a higher risk of contamination.
Pumps should not run longer for 1 or 2 minutes. The reason is this could cause motor damage.
Well, it depends on your water heater's recovery rate, which is how long it takes to reheat the water tank once it depletes. On average, an 80-gallon tank water heater can take anywhere from 1-2 hours to recover.
Lack of Rain
However, the water your well supplies come from a source, and when there's no replenishment, it will start to dry out. Whenever you experience a long dry season or don't get other forms of precipitation, the water that gets to the underground system will reduce significantly.
But if we're pumping out far more than it can refill, that's unsustainable. Groundwater recharges from rainfall which seeps through the soil into deeper layers where evaporation can't get to it. It can also refill from surface waters.
If your well pump stopped working after a thunderstorm, check to see if the well was struck by lightning. If there is a short or surge in the power to your well, the circuit might have blown. Turn the circuit breaker on and off again to test, or change the fuses.
Oddly enough, rainfall seeps into the ground and moves through the soil at an estimated rate of 10 feet per year. Since your well water aquifers are typically much deeper than that (sometimes hundreds of feet below ground), it could take more than a decade for todays water to impact your deep well.
Avoid using, mixing or storing hazardous chemicals, such as paint, fertilizer, pesticides, motor oil, gas, weed killer or other pollutants near your well. Do not dump waste near your well or near sinkholes, as this may contaminate your water supply.
This could damage the well's borehole, the pump, and contaminate your drinking water. A new, deep, and modern well may be the only option to ensure a safe and steady water supply after your current well runs dry.
The recharge rate for residential wells averages five gallons per minute. If yours can't keep up, it could be a bad sign. So, let's explore the most common causes of slower refill times and what to do if your well runs dry.
A flow rate of 600 gallons per hour is considered a high flow rate; 150 gallons per hour or less is a low flow rate. Why is it important to know this? You can usually fill a pool if your well has a high flow rate, even if it takes a while. But wells with low flow rates can run very slowly and even run dry temporarily.
“They can contain lead or be made from materials that leach chemicals into the water, especially when heated by the sun. “Plus, garden hoses are usually left outside in unsanitary conditions, making them susceptible to bacteria and insects.” The City of Milwaukee agrees: “It is not safe to drink from garden hoses.
If wells in the area are pumped at a faster rate than the aquifer around it is recharged by precipitation or other underground flow, then water levels in the well can be lowered. This can happen during drought, due to the extreme scarcity of rain.
A common symptom of a waterlogged pressure tank is constant fluctuations in water pressure. You will be able to notice these fluctuations in all outlets in a home, especially the shower. You can see a visual representation of these changes on the pressure gauge on the outside of the tank.
The benefit of heavy rainfall to your well may not be fully realized, if there is a benefit at all. High levels of precipitation cause well owners other problems with higher frequency and levels of Coliform bacteria occurring during such periods.
Two typical methods are (1) using chemicals to loosen and sometimes dissolve the encrusting materials so they can be pumped from the well and (2) cleaning the well using a mechanical action, pressure, or fluid force (air or water). The best results come from “both”.
Common causes include power outages affecting the well pump, malfunctioning pressure switches, or a drop in the water table leading to a low-yield well.
The Water Well Board suggests that a minimum water supply capacity for domestic internal household use should be at least 600 gallons of water within a two-hour period once each day. This is equivalent to a flow rate of 5 gallons per minute (gpm) for two hours.
