Jacobean is very similar to Dark Walnut but slightly darker. Both stain colors have dark brown hues with minor differences in tint and undertones.
This is called the heartwood, and it may also have lighter browns, purples, grays, or reddish tints. The outermost portion of the tree known as the sapwood because it carries the trees nutrients is typically a pale blonde color, though it can also be yellow-gray as well.
Woods with warm undertones will look yellow or red - think Cherry, Mahogany, and Hickory. These woods will work well together, even if they vary in darkness and grain. Cool-toned woods will look a little bit grey, like Ash, Maple, Poplar, or Pine.
Walnut wood can change color depending on the way it's dried or its age. The heartwood usually is a dark brown color and the sapwood is a light yellow color. When the wood is left out in the elements, such as the sun, the lighter wood will turn darker and the darker wood will turn lighter.
You might pair Cordovan Brown with Blank Canvas—a soft, warm white—which Behr chose as its 2023 Color of the Year for interiors. The paint firm PPG also chose a deep brown stain as its 2023 Stain Color of the Year: Chestnut Brown. The rich brown tones may be part of the resurgence of 1970s design styles.
White walnut has a much lighter color than black walnut wood, but that's not the only difference: This wood is much softer, and it's not as durable against decay as the other types of black walnut wood. It's easy to work with, but because it's soft, it has a fuzzy surface, even after it's been sanded.
I did some research and discovered that red walnuts are a fairly recent creation. They are not genetically modified and were created using natural methods of grafting Persian red-skinned walnuts onto larger and creamier English walnuts. There are currently two varieties of red walnuts; Livermore and Yolo Red.
New walnut has a consistent dark-brown color but as it gets older, two changes occur. 1: Unlike maple and cherry, it gets lighter. 2: A rich honey color starts to come through the grain. You can see the difference between a new table (left) and a four-year-old table (right).
The wood stain color American Walnut isn't as dark as the color Kona, but it does pull more oranges tones.
Espresso wood is darker than dark walnut which is more of a rustic dark brown. Its real color toes the line of black and dark brown, which is why it gets its name from coffee.
Oak has a light to middle brown colour with some reddish hues, complimented by a straight and tight grain pattern. Walnut can range anywhere from a light brown to a deep, dark chocolate hue. Though its grain is very open and more coarse than maple, walnut still has a beautiful, uniform surface.
Dark Walnut is probably the coolest brown profile of any wood stain out there. Like Cherry, it lacks the orange glaze coloring typical of many wood stains. However, it also has very little noticeable red undertones.
Complementary Colors
Walnut cabinets are brown. Hence, you should consider the paint colors placed opposite brown. The tones have different shades of green and blue, such as light blue, aquamarine, teal, turquoise, and soft gray. With darker wood cabinets, you can go with shades of green for walls.
Typically, walnuts are lighter and slightly larger than pecans. When removed from their shells, they have a golden color. Walnuts are also softer; grinding or crumbling them is easy. Pecans are usually darker, while walnuts are stubbier and have two hemispheres with a brain-like shape.
Walnut is a darker wood with shades that range from pale browns to dark browns.
Special Walnut by Minwax (also available here!) is a lighter, brown walnut color. I found it to be similar to Early American but with more muted brown tones and no red tones. I've seen it used on flooring and it's another very versatile stain color.
